Residents of the Musrara neighborhood in central Jerusalem this week filed an objection to the construction of a housing complex for volunteers and clerics of the Catholic Church, which is expected to be built above a synagogue in the neighborhood. According to the plan, the compound will be used as a residential building for volunteers and clergy in the church, and will be built above the "Shabbat Ahim" synagogue that has been operating in the neighborhood for 60 years.

The residents' claim is that this will lead to the dissolution of the worship community. "It is not possible to build a structure owned by a non-Jew and without any value to Judaism, to be used by non-Jews who have no values or connection to Judaism," the opponents are furious. "The proposed construction will destroy the prayer routine."

Residents claim that the proposed plan will exceptionally change the meticulous planning in the east of the neighborhood. "It makes no sense to set up a monster that would destroy all the canned fabric," they said. "The plan seeks to use the building for the use of non-residents, which causes significant damage to the character of the neighborhood."

The Jerusalem municipality outright rejected the residents' claims.

An opinion attached to the plan by city engineer Yoel Even stated that "this is a private lot that offers construction that complies with the policy, and there is no impediment to its approval."

However, it was emphasized that the works must be coordinated so that the synagogue will continue to function.

About two years ago, the Catholic Church opposed a plan by the Jerusalem municipality to build a promenade in the Mount of Olives area, claiming that it was an "unprecedented attack on churches and their believers."

The plan included land expropriations on which several monasteries and churches are housed.
