Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced today that Moscow is aware of the West's attempts to discredit the results of the parliamentary elections in Russia.
Sputnik news agency quoted Lavrov as saying during the opening of the headquarters of popular support for the United Russia party: "Our internal affairs, especially elections, are given special attention abroad, especially by our Western partners, as they are trying to use international organizations in every possible way to complicate the conduct of elections."
Lavrov added: "We know that additional steps are being prepared, including that they want to pave the way for trying to discredit the results of our elections. We are monitoring this and we will draw conclusions and take appropriate measures."
Lavrov had confirmed earlier that Western countries want to undermine internal political stability in Russia before the elections by making baseless accusations about citizen Alexei Navalny and other issues.
The next elections in Russia at various levels, including parliamentary, are scheduled for September 19, the day of the unified vote.
