The Russian ambassador to Germany, Sergey Nechaev, considered that the agreements between the United States of America and Germany will not affect the gas pipeline project (North Stream 2), which has only a few weeks left for its complete completion.
Nechaev told the Russian newspaper Izvestia: We proceed from the fact that the German-American agreement will not affect the pace of the construction of North Stream 2 because the construction work is in its final stage, with only a few weeks left to be completed.
He pointed out that any German-American agreements on the North Stream 2 project are not binding on Russia, pointing out that Berlin and Washington did not conclude an agreement on the project, but rather a joint statement that is not legally binding for the signatories.
Germany and the United States published a joint statement indicating measures to support Ukraine, European energy security, common goals for climate protection and stipulating a number of conditions for the operation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Last June, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak expressed his country's hope to complete the construction of the North Stream 2 project at the end of this year, with about 100 km remaining to finish the project.
It is noteworthy that the North Stream 2 project includes the construction of two pipelines to transport gas from Russia with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas annually through the Baltic Sea, territorial waters or the exclusive economic zones of Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany.
The United States opposes the project, imposing sanctions on the participants in its implementation in December last year and demanding that the joint stock companies stop immediately laying the pipeline.
