The Judicial Selection Committee convenes today (Monday) at the Ministry of Justice in Jerusalem, for the first time in eight months.

The committee has four new members.

The committee is headed by Justice Minister Gideon Saar, and is accompanied by a coalition representative, Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked.

MK Knesset representatives are happy Efrat Reitan and Rothman.

"I'm glad the first gathering of the Judicial Selection Committee," said Justice Minister Sa'ar, at the entrance to the meeting. "We gathered speed after the composition of the Judicial Appointments Committee completed last Wednesday with representatives of the Knesset committees Selection "And from the government, to start moving forward to staff the standards of judgment that are needed today in all courts," he said.

"There is a big load in the system and intensive work of the committee is required to staff those standards," Saar added, saying that "therefore we are already convening today to set up the subcommittees, and that they will start working as urgently as possible, that we can move forward."

"I am convinced that everyone who sits at this table, regardless of the body it represents, is the choice of the best judges," he concluded.

Meanwhile, dozens of appointed judges in the various courts are waiting for the committee to be elected after a long hiatus in its activities, the most significant of which are two Supreme Court justices, after Justices Hanan Meltzer and Menachem Mazuz retired last year and have not yet been replaced.

But at today's meeting no appointments will be made, it is a technical meeting at which subcommittees are appointed to screen the candidates, and Supreme Court Justice Neil Handel is elected as vice president Esther Hayut, according to the seniority system, where judges are appointed according to seniority.

In light of the upcoming holidays, the election of judges will likely be postponed to October-November.

One of the most intriguing members of the committee is MK Simcha Rotman, who is one of the Supreme Court's most prominent critics.

Rothman himself opposes the existence of the Judicial Selection Committee and has previously called for its abolition, now for the first time he will be one of its members and will influence the identity of judges.
