The Hong Kong International Airport is determined to develop into an environmentally friendly smart airport, and cooperate with the Hong Kong government to achieve carbon neutrality goals by 2050.

The Airport Authority cooperated with China Light & Power to develop air-conditioning pre-conditioning systems and battery energy storage systems to achieve better energy-saving effects.

Among them, the newly researched air-conditioning pre-conditioning system will automatically collect data such as the observatory and flight information, automatically "fix the air-conditioning", adjust and output the most suitable air-conditioning volume, save energy, and maintain passenger comfort.

Tang Yuanjing, General Manager of Infrastructure Engineering and Maintenance of the Airport Authority, pointed out that the introduction of an air-conditioning pre-conditioning system and two new chillers can save about 5.1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 1,200 households.

The air-conditioning pre-conditioning system automatically collects observatory data for prediction

The newly developed air-conditioning pre-conditioning system automatically collects real-time data from the observatory every hour, such as temperature, humidity, sunshine intensity, wind speed, etc., and combines the number of airport flights and sea water temperature data to construct a big data model to predict the future 24 hours of the passenger terminal building. Changes in temperature and cooling capacity required.

The system will pre-adjust and output the most suitable amount of air-conditioning to save energy while maintaining passenger comfort.

The new system was launched in the Airport Terminal 1 at the beginning of this year. It is the world's first system that uses big data to predict air-conditioning demand.

The forecast accuracy of 5.1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity is 90%

The original air-conditioning system of the airport relied on indoor temperature sensing for real-time adjustment without predictive function. The overall annual consumption of 300 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, of which Passenger Terminal One accounted for 25% of the total.

The air-conditioning pre-conditioning system combined with the two new 5,000-ton refrigerators replaced this year will save approximately 5.1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 1,200 CLP residential users, and can also reduce 1,900 tons of carbon emissions.

Luo Guoguo, deputy director of customer service at China Power Corporation, pointed out that the accuracy rate of the forecasting system is 90%, and the current airport passenger flow is not much. If the flow of people and the number of flights rises to the level of 2018 to 2019, the standard will be improved.

Build the largest battery reserve system in Hong Kong for emergency use

In order to cope with the three-track project, the AA is currently expanding the passenger terminal, constructing a sky corridor and introducing electric vehicles. To ensure the reliability of the system, more backup power sources are needed.

CLP is also cooperating with the Airport Authority to develop the largest battery energy storage system in Hong Kong to provide the airport with safe and reliable emergency power for environmentally friendly vehicles.

The original back-up power system of the airport uses diesel to generate electricity, and the airport will conduct routine tests every month, during which a certain amount of electricity will be generated.

The new system will collect electricity and store it for emergency use.

There are currently 8 sets of batteries in the new battery reserve system, each with 18 independent batteries for 144, with a total power output of 4 MW, which is equivalent to 55,000 10,000 mAh (milliampere hour) mobile chargers.

If any independent battery is damaged, the system will automatically isolate and operate without interruption.

The backup power system, which resembles a "large urine bag", is stored in three 40-foot container trucks with a total weight of 75 tons and high mobility.

In addition, lithium iron phosphate batteries are used for power generation, which are characterized by heat resistance, low noise, zero emission, stability and fast release speed.

The system has been activated for menstruation in June this year.

Luo Guo said that in the future, he will consider applying the two systems to other passenger transportation facilities and buildings at the airport, and will also consider extending it to the industrial and commercial sectors, such as shopping malls and construction sites, to help various industries achieve sustainable development.
