At Google, telecommuting can be expensive

2021-08-10T16:48:23.709Z

Teleworkers are paid according to their place of residence and the cost of living there. A practice that pushes employees to think.

The Californian tech giants are at the forefront in the generalization of teleworking.

But employees who opt for this solution in a sustainable way must do their calculations before signing an amendment to their employment contract.

Google has made a calculator available to its employees to estimate their future salary according to their place of residence, indexed to the cost of living.

An anonymous employee, quoted by Reuters, ended up giving up his plan to telecommute rather than going to the seat in Seattle every day, at the cost of two hours of commute, because he would have lost 10% of salary there.

“Our compensation has always been determined by location,”

admitted a Google spokesperson.

An employee at the firm's New York office who chooses to move an hour's train ride away to Stamford, Connecticut, would be paid 15% less if he chooses to telecommute.

A San Francisco employee living near Lake Tahoe would lose 25%, according to the calculator.

On the other hand, an employee of these headquarters in San Francisco or New York who teleworked from his home in these metropolises would be paid the same salary as his colleagues who physically go to the office.

Facebook and Twitter have also implemented such variable salary policies depending on the domicile.

This policy of wage discrimination is contested.

"Google is clearly not obliged to do that

," said Jake Resenfeld, professor of sociology at Washington University in St. Louis.

By definition, they were paying these workers 100% of their salary, so there should be no problem continuing to pay them the same compensation if they choose to telecommute. ”
