According to the prosecution, the two defendants,

of the Ansaroul Islam armed group, on May 2, 2018, attacked and set fire to the primary school in Bafina, a locality located in the province of Sanmatenga, in the north-central region. Accompanied by four other people, they also set fire to the school principal's home, before taking two motorcycles. At the stand, the two defendants admitted the facts, explaining that they had gone to Bafina to attack the village vigilante group. They then decided to target the primary school and teachers

, advocated by the Islamist group Ansaroul Islam.

Found guilty, these two jihadists were sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, including 15 years of security. They will also have to pay damages of nearly 4 million CFA francs (around 6,000 euros). Monday, the correctional chamber of the judicial pole specializing in the repression of acts of terrorism, opened the first trials for terrorism during which ten cases will be judged until August 13. Very active in northern Burkina Faso, Ansaroul Islam was created in 2016 by Ibrahim Malam, a Burkinabè preacher from Soum province, Sahel region.

The group claimed responsibility for several attacks against the Burkinabè army, the deadliest of which killed 12 soldiers in December 2016, before affiliating with Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (Aqmi). Burkina Faso has been facing regular and deadly jihadist attacks since 2015, particularly in the northern and eastern regions close to Mali and Niger, also confronted with the deadly actions of armed jihadists. These attacks, often coupled with ambushes and attributed to jihadist groups affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) group and al-Qaeda, killed more than 1,500 and forced more than 1.3 million people to flee their homes.
