The American "Foreign Policy" magazine revealed that the Turkish regime spent nearly 13 billion Turkish liras to build 131 prisons during the past five years.

The magazine stated in an investigative report that, "Satellite images revealed the construction of 131 prisons from July 2016 to March 2021 in Turkey, and that the Turkish Ministry of Justice documents and reports indicate that the Turkish government plans to establish about a hundred additional detention centers, and this massive expansion of the prison network in the country helps in the Erdogan government’s repressive campaign against its opponents and its human rights violations.”

The report added that the current construction pace was more than double what it was in the four years preceding the 15th of July. During this time, it was noted through satellite images that 64 prisons are under construction, and prisons have grown in terms of number and size, and the floor area of the built prisons has increased after 2016 by 50% compared to the previous period.

The report pointed out that Erdogan's government does not hide the crazy construction of prisons, pointing out that with the addition of new prisons, the number of prisoners increased from 180,000 on July 15, 2016 to about 300,000 in 2019.

The report stated that for the first time last year, prison capacity in Turkey ranked highest among the 47 member states of the Council of Europe.

According to the Ministry of Justice, there are currently about 300,000 prisoners in Turkey, after the number in 2010 was about 120,000, and in 2000 there were 48,000 in only 758 prisons.

Since the 2016 coup attempt, the Erdogan regime has launched a campaign of repression targeting its opponents and opponents in all sectors, resulting in the arrest of about 80,000 people awaiting trial, including many journalists, in addition to the dismissal, dismissal or suspension of work of about 150,000 others in various civil and military institutions in the country.
