The man, from West Africa, was very agitated when his wife and stepson locked him in the family apartment and called the police at around 8 p.m. The day before, he had left of his own accord the psychiatric hospital where he was staying and where he was to return on Tuesday, according to statements from members of his family. When the police arrived, the man walked towards them, brandishing a kitchen knife in his hand.

The use by the police, on two occasions, of an electric pulse pistol did not make it possible to stop it.

An official then fired a shot in the direction of the madman, said a police source.

The man died a few minutes later.

He was not known for acts of violence, no handbook or complaint had been filed against him, according to a police source.

An investigation was entrusted by the Stéphanois prosecution to the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN). The IGPN has already been seized this weekend in another case concerning the arrest in Saint-Etienne of a man suspected of theft with five bullets fired by the police while he was firing a dummy pistol in the direction of the forces of the order. The investigation relating to the fatal shot fired at La Talaudière "

should be facilitated by the fact that the intervention of the police in the apartment was filmed by the son-in-law of the victim

", told AFP a source close to the investigation. The Saint-Etienne prosecutor's office announces for its part that it will communicate "

during the day
