The Nicaraguan National Police detained Mauricio José Díaz Dávila, former diplomat and national director of the closed Citizens for Freedom (CXL) party, as reported Monday through a statement and without specifying details.

The authorities said that Díaz Dávila was detained for carrying out acts that allegedly undermine independence, sovereignty, and self-determination, in addition to "demanding, exalting and applauding the imposition of sanctions against the State of Nicaragua and its citizens, and harming the supreme interests of the nation. CXL demanded on his Facebook profile this Monday the immediate release of Díaz Dávila and respect for physical integrity after being "arbitrarily detained."

CNN is seeking the reaction of Díaz Dávila's lawyers.

The Supreme Electoral Council canceled the legal status of CXL on Friday.

He did so after the Constitutionalist Liberal Party (PLC) denounced the political force for allegedly violating the electoral law.

The Council accused CXL of promoting actions against national sovereignty.

The Interior Ministry also announced on Sunday the cancellation of the Nicaraguan passport and the nationality of the party's president, Carmella María Rogers Amburn.

The party has expressed in social networks that they condemn the measure and that the woman is Nicaraguan.

More than 30 opponents arrested in Nicaragua

Through its Twitter account, the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh) on Monday condemned what it considered was a "violent kidnapping of former ambassador Mauricio Díaz after complying with the appointment at the Prosecutor's Office."

Cenidh added that "public information indicates that his companions, his son and his lawyer were attacked by the police."

Díaz Dávila joins the 32 opponents arrested since May 28.

The figure includes eight candidates for the presidency and vice-presidency, most of them investigated under article 1 of Law No. 1055 "Law for the Defense of the Rights of the People to Independence, Sovereignty and Self-determination for Peace."

This, according to analysts, constitutes a pattern of elimination of opposition figures prior to the November elections.

The Organization of American States, the European Union, the United States Department of State and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights have unsuccessfully demanded the freedom of opposition leaders.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega insists that they are "criminals" who organized actions to destabilize the country.
