The S-Bahn station in Poing is currently being converted to make it barrier-free.

This measure was always planned with a view to a possible four-track expansion of the line.

Markt Schwaben / Poing

- The train route between Munich Ostbahnhof and Markt Schwaben is to be expanded to include four tracks.

As the Bavarian Ministry of Transport has now announced, the responsible minister, Kerstin Schreyer (CSU) has given the green light for the first relevant planning.

"We have to create an expansion perspective for this heavily used section of the route," announced the minister.

Through the specific planning, the federal government, which is responsible for the rail infrastructure, wants to “forcefully” demand an expansion in line with requirements.

According to the announcement, the Free State is financing the first planning steps with 250,000 euros, and there is already a contract with Deutsche Bahn.

A rail connection to the Munich Exhibition Center is also possible.

Bahn spokesman Klaus-Dieter Josel calls the section of the line an "expansion project of central importance".

Reconstruction at Poingen train station: Stops must meet Munich's needs

The announcement marks the beginning of planning that can drag on for years.

The neighboring communities in the districts of Ebersberg, Poing and Markt Schwaben would also be affected by an actual expansion: Massive expansion and renovations are likely to be necessary along the route and at the local train stations.

Neither the railways nor the ministry name a time horizon for the commissioning of the two additional tracks.

In the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan, there is currently no expansion perspective for the section - in contrast to the further section from Markt Schwaben via Mühldorf to Freilassing, which is planned to be expanded on two tracks, including electrification.

The Free State considers the "heavily loaded section" Munich-Markt Schwaben to be urgently in need of expansion in order to meet the demand for trains and S-Bahn around Munich.

Reconstruction at Poingen train station: central platform in planning

Speaking of expansion: the S-Bahn station in Poing is currently being converted to make it barrier-free. This measure, as well as the new pedestrian and bicycle underpass, which opened in April 2020, were always planned with a possible four-track expansion of the line in mind. Should it actually come to that, the Poing S-Bahn station would be redesigned again - and would then have a central platform. The space for this is reserved, the plans are already in the drawers.

Incidentally, there is also a requirement of the S-Bahn München Ost alliance founded in 2015: a separate train station for Messe München with a connection to the S 2. As the Bavarian Ministry of Transport is now also striving for for the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan.

The intermunicipal and non-partisan alliance (led by Messe München) has also been calling for the four-track expansion between Ostbahnhof and Markt Schwaben since 2015.
