The “Topics of the Day” have a very special guest ready for a comment on the climate crisis.
The ARD news broadcast surprises - but not everyone likes the idea.
Hamburg - Monday evening, August 9th, half-time break of the DFB Cup game between 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Traditionally, ARD also broadcasts its news magazine “Tagesthemen” during the fifteen-minute break in its live broadcasts of football matches.
In addition to reports on current events announced by the presenter Caren Miosga, ARD viewers will find a real surprise.
Another topic is, of course, the status report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which warns of global warming by 1.5 degrees as early as 2030.
Classifying and commenting on the overall situation is left to NDR celebrity Eckart von Hirschhausen instead of a journalist from his own ranks.

In his guest commentary, the doctor and moderator commented on the expected dramatic effects of climate change.
Von Hirschhausen raised his imaginary index finger and turned out to be a warning.

The climatic extremes of the recent past are no coincidence, explains Hirschhausen.
He mentions the major fires raging in Turkey and Greece, heat waves of 50 degrees such as in Canada and the flood disaster that struck West Germany as examples.

“How many more events of the century do we need to understand that this century has only just begun and that the next ten years will determine how it will end?” Asks von Hirschhausen in this context.
The journalist misses a policy that acts instead of just talking.
In his view, at least an attempt should be made to reduce CO2 emissions.

His surprising appearance on “Tagesthemen” was received differently by ARD viewers.
Some feel understood and think it's good that Hirschhausen has spoken out about the climate crisis.
On the other hand, there are critical voices who consider his performance to be out of place.
One user literally took it with humor: “Hirschhausen has gone from being a doctor to a comedian to a journalist. It's an unfortunate order. Because I can't take him seriously. Comedians should always be the last job before you retire ”.
