(CNN) -

The post-apocalyptic thriller "I Am Legend" is a topic of conversation among the crowd doubting about COVID-19 vaccines, prompting the film's co-writer to emphasize that the plot is completely fictional.

Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the script for the 2007 film starring Will Smith, clarified that "I Am Legend" is pure fantasy.

This after an anonymous source told the New York Times in a report that he feared vaccination against COVID-19 because of what happened in the film.

  • What's different about the delta variant?

    This is what is known

In that film, based on the 1954 novel of the same name, in an attempt to transform the measles virus into a cure for cancer something goes wrong, so most of humanity is infected by turning people into hybrids zombie-vampires.

The shots do not influence the plot.

Goldsman tweeted a short response to the movie-inspired misinformation: "Oh. My God. It's a movie. I made it up. No. It's. Real."

Oh.

My.

God.

It's a movie.

I made that up.

It's.

Not.

Real.

The film has received various opinions from anti-vaccine people since the first covid-19 vaccines were authorized in 2020. Reuters published a "fact check" of the film's plot in December last year after users Claims circulated on social media that a "vaccine" had turned the movie's characters into zombies.

To be clear, vaccines have never caused zombie-like reactions in recipients.

Countless reports made in the last year show that vaccination against covid-19 is the best defense against serious illness or death from the disease.

  • The U.S. vaccination rate is at its highest in weeks, but mask and vaccination mandates may be needed

A new analysis of data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that more than 99.99% of fully vaccinated people have not had a severe case of post-vaccination covid-19 infection resulting in hospitalization or death.

(However, in 2011 the CDC used a fictional zombie apocalypse to educate on disaster preparedness.)

Smith, whose character as a virologist spends much of the film fending off infected mutants and searching for a possible cure, has not commented on the "I Am Legend" uproar.

But it seems that those who base their fear of vaccines on the film have not understood the plot well.
