“Alibi measures that don't work”: No air filters for Schleissheim's children

Not everyone on the parish council thinks that's okay.

Oberschleißheim

- The municipality of Oberschleißheim does not buy mobile air purifiers for schools and daycare centers.

The contested benefits and the tight budget lead the community, with a clear majority, to distance themselves from the earlier belief that air filters and manual ventilation protect schools.

Mayor Markus Böck (CSU) forbade allegations to equate the vote against air filters with endangering the welfare of the child.

As long as the use of mobile devices cannot be proven, he turns against "alibi measures that do not help".

This view is not shared by all municipalities.

The district continues to rely on a combination of ventilation and mobile devices - as long as an expert raises his thumb.

SPD warns: "It will take some time before schoolchildren are vaccinated"

This does not apply to Oberschleißheim.

According to the latest calculations by Casimir Katz (FDP), mobile devices are not as effective as once assumed.

With 17: 8 votes, the CSU, the Greens, the FDP and parts of the FW thwarted the SPD's application to equip classrooms and as many rooms as possible in daycare centers with mobile air purifiers.

The option of first checking where devices make sense is off the table.

Local councils of the SPD and the second part of the FW see the Free State's funding program to bear 50 percent of the investment costs as an opportunity to protect school children from Covid.

"It will take some time before schoolchildren are vaccinated," argued SPD spokesman Florian Spirkl.

And the fourth wave is sure to come.

At first too expensive, now not convinced of the benefits

Corona and the budget situation are driving the community.

At least that is what Schleissheim's politics sometimes appear to be. At first it seemed too expensive for the parliamentary groups to equip schools with air purifiers for 200,000 euros, while some of the councilors urged not to look at the money when it comes to protecting pupils.

At that time, a budget lock was already in place.

So it was first agreed to examine the usefulness of air filters.

When the number of infections exploded last autumn, more and more councils urged an unconditional supply of the devices.

Instead of a permanently installed system?

The local council also rejected the SPD application because areas of the schools that cannot be ventilated through windows are already protected by permanently installed ventilation and air conditioning systems. In the meantime, the majority of elected officials tend to use air conditioning systems. Compared to mobile devices, the state offers 80 percent funding for permanently installed systems.

It is unclear how quickly the Berglwald School and the school in the park settlement could be equipped with air conditioning systems. Mayor Böck gives the schools no hope of installing systems before winter. Due to the high demand, there is a delivery time of one and a half years. Apart from that, the situation at the schools has not been clarified. Apparently it is too late to install systems in the renovated school in the park settlement. Böck: “The statics would not hold up.” Böck therefore wants to have the installation of systems in both schools checked.

As far as neither mobile nor stationary protected schools are concerned, pupils and teachers should make do with AHA rules and ventilation.

For Casimir Katz it boils down to the formula: "Vaccinate or infect." In his opinion, the only way out of the crisis is through a comprehensive vaccination campaign.

However, according to Fritz-Gerrit-Kropp, possible side effects for children and adolescents are insufficiently documented.

The Greens spokesman identified the “main problem” as “adults, parents of students who refuse to be vaccinated”.
