The Directorate of Agriculture in Homs estimated the governorate’s production of peaches at 1,520 tons during the current season, out of the total cultivated area of 2,985 dunums.
The Director of Agriculture, Eng. Nazih Al-Rifai, said in a statement to SANA Economic Bulletin that the total number of trees in the irrigated areas amounted to 62,608, of which 50,798 are fruitful. Peach species "Black Jewel and Stinbuli" and the process of picking began about fifteen days ago.
Farmer Salim al-Hanawi from Bahour village says that the season is good this year, but its prices are very low compared to its high cost of diesel, fertilizers, medicines, pesticides and services. By traders, to ensure its quality, in addition to increasing the amount of agricultural diesel.
For his part, Fouad Mahfoud, Mayor of Al-Maranah, pointed out the suffering of farmers, represented by the high prices of medicines and agricultural pesticides and their poor effectiveness, in addition to the lack of sufficient fertilizers and diesel, calling for the need to help the farmer and secure the requirements of agricultural work, especially pesticides, which play a key role in ensuring production in quantity and quality.
For his part, Mowaffaq Zakaria, Vice-President of the Homs Farmers Union, indicated that the planting is provided to farmers at studied and competitive prices according to the agricultural plan of associations and farmers, in addition to providing fertilizer according to the plan for each type of fruitful trees according to a need schedule of almonds, apples and others. Agricultural diesel is also provided according to the actual needs, despite the Quantities are limited this season.
