In Austria, the authorities are recording a sharp increase in new infections every day.

Measures are now being tightened in one district.

Vienna - The infection situation in the corona pandemic seems to be worsening again across Europe.

More and more countries are reporting increasing numbers of new infections despite the progressing vaccination campaign.

The renewed increase can be attributed, among other things, to the spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus around the world.

As a further point, the summer temperatures can also be used, which ensure that people have more contact again and the virus can spread better.

Coronavirus in Austria: Daily new infections explode - highest level since May

For this reason, experts have been warning of a Europe-wide fourth wave for a long time.

In this context, worrying news came from Austria on Wednesday.

There, the number of new infections every day has made a huge leap.

The national crisis team reported over 900 new infections within 24 hours.

The portal

therefore spoke of an "explosion" in numbers.

This means that the value of new infections is not only well above the 7-day average of just under 600, but also at the highest value since mid-May.

Extrapolated to the population of Germany, the 900 new infections would correspond to the proportion of 8500 infections in the Federal Republic.

The 7-day incidence nationwide in Austria is 43, which is a good bit higher than in Germany (25.1).

Coronavirus in Austria: Incidence in East Tyrol climbs to 332

The country's front runner is the Tyrolean district of Lienz, where the incidence climbed to 332 on Wednesday.

In the district, which is also known as East Tyrol, the measures have therefore been tightened again.

An FFP2 mask is now required again for shopping.

In the rest of Austria, ordinary mouth and nose protection is sufficient.

Events in Lienz were also limited to 100 participants.

For the communities of Innervillgraten and Oberlienz, an exit test is also mandatory for those who have not been vaccinated.

Cornavirus in Austria: Vaccination quota on par with Germany

According to the regional authorities, the high numbers in East Tyrol have to do with returning travelers and the relatively low vaccination rate.

Nationwide, however, Austria is on a par with Germany in terms of vaccination progress.

54.8 percent of the population in Austria are considered fully immunized.

In Germany it is 55.6 percent.

The level is also similar for the initial vaccinations given.

Chancellor Angela Merkel warned the federal and state governments on Tuesday evening after the Corona summit that the current vaccination quota would not be sufficient to prevent a fourth wave.

The situation in Austria could now act as a harbinger for developments in Germany.
