They were traveling with unsuitable boats, they did not get far: 108 refugees were rescued on the crossing to Great Britain - one of them probably had to be flown to the hospital by plane.

In the English Channel, more than a hundred refugees were again in distress who wanted to get from France to Great Britain in unsuitable boats.

The French authorities announced in the evening that 108 people were rescued from a total of four boats on Wednesday.

One of the migrants was flown to a hospital by plane.

The number of attempts to illegally cross the English Channel from France to Great Britain has risen sharply in the past two years.

In 2020, more than 9,500 people had crossed or tried to cross over to the UK - four times as many as in 2019.

This year the number should increase significantly again.

According to British press reports, it is now more than 10,000 refugees.

Last week the government in London reported a record 482 migrants crossing the English Channel in a single day.

The crossing is risky due to the heavy shipping traffic and treacherous currents, and the refugees' boats are often unsuitable.
