The social network Instagram apologized for removing the official poster for the new film by Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar

that showed a woman's nipple,

after the designer denounced the censorship.

Facebook, owner of Instagram, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that several posters of the film

Parallel Mothers

, which show a nursing nipple, were removed for

"violating our policies against nudity"

after being published on Monday.

“However,

we make exceptions to allow nudity under certain circumstances,

including when it is a clear artistic context.

Therefore, we have restored the posts that share Almodóvar's movie poster on Instagram, and we truly regret any confusion caused, ”the company said in an email statement.

Long-standing policies and previous censorship of Facebook and Instagram have sparked the

#FreetheNipple movement

on Instagram, which is used by artists and celebrities to display nipples despite the rules.

The prohibition does not apply to male nipples.

The poster designer, Spaniard Javier Jaén, published on Tuesday that it had been removed from his Instagram account: “As expected @instagram has removed the poster we have made for Almodóvar's latest film #madresparalelas.

I hang it up again.

Thanks for sharing".

The Almodóvar producer has not commented on the matter.

Parallel Mothers,

starring Penelope Cruz, will premiere on September 1 at the Venice Film Festival.
