On August 15th at 11 am, the Kunsthalle Nürnberg and the New German Museum Nürnberg are hosting the exhibition project “Symposion Urbanum Nürnberg”.

Nuremberg - On Sunday (August 15) at 11 am, the first public recording of “The Sound of the Fugue” will take place in the Karl Bröger Tunnel as part of the exhibition project “Symposion Urbanum Nürnberg *”.

It is organized by the Kunsthalle Nürnberg and the Neues Museum Nürnberg, as the city reports.

Nuremberg: The project dates back to 1997

In 1997, the Nuremberg artist Winfried Baumann won the competition for the artistic design of Willy-Prölß-Platz and the Karl-Bröger-Tunnel. He was commissioned to expand the tunnel. 22 years later, in autumn 2019, the Karl Bröger Tunnel in Nuremberg was rebuilt and redesigned. “The sound of the joint” is part of the overall artistic concept “Extension 97/19” and relates to the background noise of urban spaces, rail traffic and the linear structures of the tunnel walls.

For the first time, Reiner Marquart, percussionist and composer, will reinterpret yellow fugue No. 1 with the marimba.

Norbert Nagel, the internationally renowned clarinetist and arranger, will then play the red fugue No. 2 on Sunday (September 26th) at 11:00 a.m. in the Karl-Bröger-Tunnel.

In the future, this will result in a stylish and innovative concert format with three new recordings every year.

Nuremberg: A random composition that is open in terms of content

Due to various structural changes, various demolitions occurred in the tunnel, which led to flaking and defects.

The damaged wall tiles were replaced with black granite tiles.

The result was a mural like an abstract notation.

In addition, blackboards and colored strips in the floor area mark the double joints.

The numerous sketches and drawings are based on observations and perceptions in the tunnel that Winfried Baumann made over time.

The graphics can have a stimulating effect on the performers and encourage them to spontaneously transform the impulses into music.

At the top of the double fugues, sound bodies are installed that are activated at different time intervals so that the music can be experienced randomly or consciously.

There are also QR codes at various points in the tunnel, which interested parties can use to access information about the art installation and the performers of current or outdated pieces of music.

Nuremberg: 50th anniversary of the "Symposion Urbanum Nuremberg"

The art project "Extension 97/19" by Winfried Baumann stands for a sculptural change in public space and offers access for the different groups.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the "Symposion Urbanum Nuremberg", the city of Nuremberg is looking forward to the conference on "(Art in) public space", which will take place from October 22nd to 24th.

International guests will also appear.

In addition, the town hall announced that numerous new works of art will be created in public spaces by 2025.
