Algeria-SANA

A national catastrophe by all standards, which Algeria still suffers from, represented by the fires that have not subsided for days, and which destroyed thousands of dunums of forests and agricultural lands, as well as dozens of victims, hundreds of injured and destroyed homes, in exchange for tremendous efforts that are still being made persistently by the emergency services, the army and the Algerian citizens to confront the flames This disaster with unparalleled courage and determination in order to surround it and overcome it.

With the passage of four days of continuous efforts by the Algerian authorities and their citizens to put out the fires, the signs of success in cordoning off the fires began to take a decisive turn. emergency.

33 fire trucks, 280 firefighters, 100 soldiers and a number of trucks mobilized to besiege this big fire before successfully extinguishing it, while the efforts of the Algerian civil protection teams, with the support of planes from abroad, continue to work to put out 92 fires fueled by high temperatures and spreading across 16 states, the largest of which is 37 in Tizi Ouzou 15 in El Tarf, 11 fires in Bejaia, 8 fires in Jijel, and 4 in Souk Ahras.

The firefighting teams are also pouring their efforts to put out dozens of fires in the northeast of the country up to the border with Tunisia in areas that witness record temperatures of more than 50 degrees Celsius, where 800 men and 115 trucks participate in extinguishing these fires with the support of two helicopters from the civil protection air group and helicopters belonging to the army.

Although these unprecedented fires have so far claimed the lives of 69 people, including 28 soldiers, and prompted the Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to declare national mourning for a period of three days, what is striking about the active participation of all groups and segments of Algerian society side by side in extinguishing them, especially the army, as the percentage of fires Many of the victims are among the soldiers who paid with their lives to face it with courage.

One of the Algerian states most affected by these fires is the state of Tizi Ouzou, located on the Atlas Mountains and covered with forests. The fires engulfed vast areas of forests. Civil protection personnel, army forces and volunteers were able to put them out, and residents of villages in the areas began to return to their homes from which they fled.

In addition to the state of Tizi Ouzou, large fires spread over a large area of the country, including the states of El Tarf, Jijel, Bejaia, Skikda, Boumerdes, Medea, Blida, Setif, Annaba and Bouira, in addition to the states of Constantine, Guelma, Tebessa, Souk Ahras and Tipasa.

The authorities confirm that criminal hands are behind the fabrication of these fires, vowing to pursue them and apply the rule of law against them. What increased the spread of fires is the current weather in the country, as a high heat wave swept the country accompanied by dry winds that led to the spread of fires in mountainous areas known for the spread of forests in them.

While the Algerian Prime Minister, Ayman Abdel Rahman, pointed out that the security and judicial authorities have “scientific evidence that the fires are criminal,” he indicated that the inventory of losses begins from today without waiting for all fires to be extinguished, promising to allocate a special budget to compensate the victims, indicating at the same time that efforts to extinguish the rest will continue. And his government's contacts with foreign countries to charter planes to help put them out.

The Public Prosecutor at the Tizi Ouzou Judicial Council confirmed what the Prime Minister referred to, indicating that what indicates that these fires are a “criminal act” is the burning of fires on August 9 at the same time in different forest points and a different geographical space, regardless of other states. In this context, Medea Jahid Mouss revealed the arrest of three people suspected of involvement in the burning of a forest in the municipality of Houdan.

In the face of this national catastrophe, the Algerian government continues its tireless efforts to control the fires and treat their damage and repercussions, as President Abdelmadjid Tebboune gave his instructions to take the necessary measures to control the situation left by these fires, pointing out that the Algerian people, as they “victorious in previous ordeals, will triumph in this ordeal.”

Despite all the repercussions and effects that these fires will have on the Algerian reality, government and popular assurances show that this ordeal will be overcome again and work to overcome its negative consequences.
