But now comes a surprising message from Berlin: Angela Merkel will probably appear in the election campaign after all.

It is unclear whether she will perform together with Laschet or alone.

Merkel's change of heart comes in a week in which several surveys have cemented the CDU's descent.
In one of the surveys, the CDU had fallen to 23 percent, the SPD rose to 19 percent.
And the Greens were at 20 percent.
Other surveys varied slightly, but ended the period of the clear CDU lead.
If it were a matter of personal popularity and not party affiliation, even Olaf Scholz (SPD) would currently have the best chances for the Chancellery.
So things are not going well for Laschet.
Even within the party, Laschet is said to have been asked to change the election campaign strategy - but to no avail.
