Prime Minister Naftali Bennett stressed during his meeting yesterday (Wednesday) with CIA chief William Burns that Israel and the United States should formulate a common strategy for a scenario in which Iran would not be interested in returning to the nuclear deal, according to senior Israeli officials.

According to senior Israeli officials, they described the meeting between Bennett and the head of the US Central Intelligence Agency as part of preparations for a meeting between the Prime Minister and US President Joe Biden, which will take place in August in Washington.

Burns is considered very close to Biden.

During the meeting, Bennett presented to Burns his policy on the Iranian issue.

"It was important for the prime minister to make it clear that when we say that it is a mistake to return to the nuclear agreement from 2015, it is not an automatic continuation of the policy of the previous government in Israel. There is a whole different view behind it," said a senior Israeli official.

The Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the defense establishment are of the opinion that the likelihood of an Iranian return to the nuclear agreement is declining.

Senior Israeli officials say that if Iran does not return to the nuclear deal, there will be an urgent need for dialogue with the United States on formulating a policy on Iranian uranium enrichment, on Iranian efforts to advance the development of a nuclear missile and also on Iranian activities in the region.

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid today addressed the Israeli fear of what will happen if the current limbo continues - Iran will not return to the nuclear agreement and there will be no counter-moves by the United States and the superpowers.

"I am not a supporter of the agreement with Iran but I do not recognize an alternative plan. We are having a dialogue with the Americans and Europeans behind the scenes," Lapid said at a press conference in Casablanca.

The Iranian issue was the focus of Burns' meetings in Israel on Tuesday and Wednesday.

He met with Prime Minister Bennett, President Yitzhak Herzog, Defense Minister Bnei Gantz and Mossad chief David Barnea.

Gantz discusses with Burns the deepening of intelligence cooperation regarding Iranian activity in the region and its nuclear program.
