The United States and Britain said today (Thursday) that they would send thousands of troops to Afghanistan to defend and help evacuate their civilians, with the Taliban heading towards the capital Kabul and the subsequent fall of major cities.

In response to the rapid progress of the extremist organization, which began its campaign to occupy the country with the withdrawal of foreign forces in May, the Pentagon announced that it would temporarily send about 3,000 more troops in the next 48 hours, and they would dare evacuate embassies.

Britain will send about 600 Witness soldiers to help evacuate civilians and local translators.

While it is no exception that the U.S. military is sending forces to evacuate U.S. civilians from conflict hotspots around the world, the current reinforcements will arrive just two weeks before the last troops leave the international force that has operated in the country for the past 20 years.

Meanwhile, south and west of Kabul, the second largest city and the third largest city in the country are on the verge of falling to the Taliban.

The organization announced that it had taken control of Harat, near the border with Iran in the west, and a diplomatic source and witnesses reported that Kandahar was also close to falling.

The city is the spiritual base of the Taliban, which controls about two-thirds of the country.

Earlier in the day, the Taliban established a bridgehead about 150 kilometers from Kabul when it captured the city of Gazani.

The United States and Germany called on their citizens to leave the country immediately.
