Feldbahnmuseum: For the anniversary they restored a locomotive

The Feldbahnmuseum would have had three reasons to celebrate this year.

But Corona overshadowed two anniversaries and the completion of a historic locomotive.

So they made a virtue out of necessity and without further ado expanded the inventory of exhibits to include a self-made piece.

Fürstenfeldbruck's

only technical museum has existed for 45 years.

But it has only actually been located in the major district town for 40 years (see box).

“It's something like my life's work,” says the long-time head of the museum association, Heinz-Dietmar Ebert.

He has now handed over the chairmanship to his son Michael.

Of course, he still lends a hand when there is something to be done.

This is also the case with the restoration of a very rare piece: the museum had already discovered a diesel-electric Gebus locomotive in Austria in October 2017 and was able to transfer it to Germany.

The vehicle rolled off the assembly line in 1925 with the serial number 33 and is the oldest still roadworthy locomotive of its kind. The fact that it is still running is due to the hard work of the members of the Feldbahnmuseum.

They had planned the restoration for three years, as Heinz-Dietmar Ebert reports. And after all, it took three years. "It has been rebuilt from scratch," says the former club boss. On average, five people worked on it regularly - sometimes more, sometimes less. "I did the painting myself."

The special thing about the work: The locomotive was built with a track width of 760 millimeters.

In the museum, however, the rails have a track width of 600 millimeters, so the locomotive had to be rebuilt.

“We installed new axles,” reports Heinz-Dietmar Ebert.

The only new parts besides two fuses.

All other original parts have been restored.

The bus is now on the rails of the museum - but cannot be viewed by visitors due to Corona.

“The pandemic thwarted our plans,” says Heinz-Dietmar Ebert.

Thanks to reserves, membership fees and donations, the association is doing well despite two years with no entry income.

And now the members are allowed to meet again to work together in the museum.

That wasn't possible before.

A maximum of two people were only allowed to see each other for a long time.

Michael Ebert still used the time.

He built a Puch in the workshop in Puch.

Sounds strange and can be explained as follows: Between 2000 and 3000 motorized multiple units of the Puch brand were in use during the First World War.

Today these companions are practically no longer to be seen.

Even photos are hard to find.

Michael Ebert has now built a Puch motorized multiple unit in the workshop in the Bruck district of the same name.

"It would not have come about without Corona," says the club's chairman.

He started work in March.

He worked on it for hours on many evenings.

"Until he was whistled back," as his father says with a laugh.

"After all, there are other responsibilities when you have a family."

Michael Ebert used some rare old photos and drawings.

Not all measurements were given on it, so that he had to estimate in places.

After all, he was able to fall back on two original parts with a so-called turntable, which is used to clamp tree trunks, and the seat for the driver.

Everything else are replicas.

In mid-June, the time had come: the motorized railcar was placed on the rails of the museum.

It's not quite finished yet - above all, it still has to be painted.

But Michael Ebert is now turning on the vehicle's engine, and that's best done while driving on rails.

And when visitors are allowed to visit the museum again, there can even be four celebrations: two anniversaries and two new exhibits.
