Geothermal energy in Geretsried: this time it has to work

After two failures, a new geothermal attempt will be started this year, using a technology developed by the Canadian company Eavor.

Geretsried - It can be generated regardless of the weather and time of day, requires little space and can be provided permanently: Energy that is obtained from geothermal energy.

Geothermal energy has its advantages over other renewable energies.

However, it is sometimes a long way to get it - especially in Geretsried.

After two failures, another attempt is to be made this year at Hofgut Breitenbach in Gelting to promote geothermal energy.

The plans for this were presented in the council chambers on Tuesday evening.

First skepticism, then enthusiasm

The companies Enex Power Germany and Eavor GmbH are behind the project. "We had a lot of setbacks, but we also learned an incredible amount," said Enex managing director Dr. Robert Straubinger looked back on the past decade in front of a good 20 interested people in the council chamber. He reported that the Canadian company Eavor approached them a year and a half ago and presented them with their new loop technology. At first one was skeptical, the managing director admitted. In the meantime, however, a partner has been found in Eavor. Straubinger said he was enthusiastic about this concept. This would bring geothermal energy forward in Geretsried and around the world.

Eavor manager Daniel Mölk presented the principle and the further schedule.

Accordingly, the existing drilling site at Hofgut Breitenbach will be expanded for the creation of the Eavor loops and a second drilling site will be set up.

The area in between is being prepared for the construction of the power plant that will supply electricity.

Drilling is done in parallel.

The so-called loops (heat loops) are successively drilled and connected to each other at the end.

A total of four loops are to be created by 2024.

The power plant is scheduled to run at full load in 2025.

No trees have to give way

In the question and answer session that followed, the city council's environmental officer spoke up. "How much will be cleared again especially for the power plant?" Asked Volker Witte. "It is not being cleared at all," replied Mölk. “That's why the power plant is being built a bit around the corner.” The total area required is between 5,000 and 6,000 square meters. A listener asked about the status of the environmental reports. These are created and in the main operating plan procedure. “We are still doing a species protection examination, which we have expanded again ourselves,” said Mölk.

The city of Geretsried could not shake a district heating network up its sleeve, said the city councilor Franz Wirtensohn in Gelting.

“What do you do with the energy?” Asked the farmer.

"At the moment it is designed so that we can generate electricity from all of the heat," explained Mölk.

But you create an interface for the heat extraction.

"As soon as a district heating network is in place, you can join it."

Vice-Mayor Sonja Frank also asked about the district heating network.

"Does it make sense to prepare for district heating if you want to build a house now?" The Eavor manager recommended contacting the municipal utility.

"If end customers get in touch with the municipal utility, that's only positive." That also gives planning security.

City councilor Hans Hopfner said that the connection to a district heating network is not necessarily interesting for home builders, but initially for bulk buyers.

He regretted that the major construction projects in the city will be completed before the new “heat center” is ready.

Initially, connecting lines to large customers

Expert Mölk agreed with Hopfner.

It is important to have the connecting lines to large customers, "that the basic supply is in place".

Experience has shown that multi-family or single-family houses are only connected in the second step.

That would be pretty easy then.

“A heat exchanger comes in where the heating system is, and then the line from the house,” said the Eavor manager.

His business partner Straubinger added that the construction of a district heating network in Oberhaching began about eight years ago.

In the meantime it should be around 60 kilometers long.

The municipality draws its geothermal heat from the power plant in Taufkirchen.

The current has already helped us.

That alone is a great thing.

Farmer and city councilor Franz Wirtensohn

"We have a relatively large heat requirement in the city of around 10 megawatts," said Wolfgang Selig, managing director of the building cooperative.

He asked about the minimum performance.

“17 megawatts are generated per Eavor loop,” explained Enex managing director Straubinger.

With four loops, that results in a total of 68 megawatts.

Mölk added that the water is brought up at a temperature of 120 degrees and returned at 60 degrees in order to prevent the subsurface from cooling down.

Straubinger is convinced that it will work this time.

"It's not child's play, but it will work," said the Enex managing director.

“The most challenging thing will be to drill these fingers.” For this purpose, 60 kilometers are covered per Eavor loop.

City councilor Wirtensohn broke a lance for the location that evening.

"I am very happy that everything is now being handled at Hofgut Breitenbach." As reported, a second location (at the so-called Buchberger Zipfel) near the animal shelter was up for debate.

However, trees should have been felled there.

Even if a few years will pass before there is a district heating network in the city: “The electricity has helped us.

That alone is a great thing. "
