A snail eating snail - that is the tiger snail.
It is totally rare in Germany, but has now been discovered in Munich.
Hobby gardeners can look forward to it.
Munich
- who doesn't know it?
As soon as it rains, innumerable nudibranchs suddenly frolic in nature.
This is also not uncommon in the city, here you will find it especially in gardens and parks.
While most people think of the word "nudibranch" as a brown, slimy, small and stubby-looking creature that arouses unappetizing associations just by looking at it, a young woman in Munich is now making a completely different discovery.
Munich: Rare species of snail discovered near the English Garden - the body has a tiger-like pattern
On her doorstep, she discovered an animal that she had never seen before.
Clearly a snail, clearly without a housing and yet strange and - somehow beautiful.
The snail was, in comparison to the animals that usually appear, significantly longer and thinner.
The first third of the body, the so-called coat shield, was covered with black-brown and yellow spots, the remaining two-thirds of the body were brown with black stripes.
The woman from Munich immediately documented her find and immediately began researching the animal's origin.
Rare tiger snails sighted in Munich: actually native to southern Europe
In fact, she found out that the animal was a subspecies of the nudibranch that almost never appeared in the wild in Germany, a so-called tiger snail or tiger nudibranch. This type of large snail, whose Latin name is Limax Maximus, was originally native to southern Europe, but has now spread to other parts of Europe and has even been spotted overseas, reports the nature conservation association
NABU.
In Germany, however, it occurs mainly in Lower Saxony, so the appearance in the middle of Munich-Schwabing is actually a small sensation.
Like its conspecifics, the tiger snail likes it wet and green.
So it is hardly surprising that it was spotted near the Englischer Garten, the largest park in Munich, of all places.
Tiger snails eats other nudibranchs: Rare animal of interest to Munich hobby gardeners
A special feature of the tiger stick makes the animal even more mysterious and - for garden fans - more interesting. As several naturalists unanimously report, the tiger snail is not squeamish when it comes to its choice of food and also likes to eat its conspecifics of the "normal" slugs. They sometimes have a preference for fruit, vegetables and other parts of plants, which is why they are often feared and not infrequently hated by farmers and gardeners. So if you want to protect your native plants from snail infestation, you should actually just bring a few snails into the garden. In addition to plant protection, the animals are also a pretty sight compared to their fellow species.

Another surprising find was recently made in the Bohemian Forest in Bavaria.
A prehistoric mushroom that normally only occurs in southern regions grew there.
