Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will announce on Sunday the snap elections to be held on September 20, an official told the AP news agency tonight.
The Liberal prime minister is seeking to gain a majority in parliament after his party weakened two years ago and has since been forced to rely on other parties to form a coalition and enact laws in the House of Representatives.
Trudeau is interested in taking advantage of the fact that today Canada is one of the most immunized countries against Corona in the world.
Although Trudeau is no longer as popular as he once was, his government is tackling the plague with relative success.
Canada has enough vaccines for every citizen in the country and it has invested a lot of money in it to curb the disease, prevent the loss of human life and get out of the closures that are hurting the economy.
The 49-year-old Trudeau was first elected in 2015 when the Liberals gained a majority in parliament after nearly a decade in which the Conservatives were in power.
However, a series of scandals combined with the higher expectations from him that met with reality, hit the rates of support for him.
The election comes as Canadian health officials warn that the country is in the midst of the fourth wave of the corona, fueled by the Delta variant.
Accordingly, the head of the Conservative opposition party, Erin O'Toole, criticized the impending decision. "Now is not the time for elections. The health, economy and prosperity of our country should be a top priority. And I ask Mr Trudeau to put them first. I am concerned that liberals put political interests before national interests," O'Toole attacked.
