A church square as a danger zone?

This rather atypical situation occurred in Miesbach - because plastered parts of the tower of the Assumption of Mary have come loose.

But why?

Miesbach

- You can actually feel safe under the protection of the Assumption of Mary.

That's what Sieglinde Rosner thought when she headed for the bank on the sunny south side of the Miesbach parish church.

Suddenly she saw that a few meters away from her cleaning parts were lying on the floor.

When the senior representative of the parish risked a look up, she noticed that the chunks had come loose from the west wall of the church tower.

Rosner did not hesitate and immediately informed the rectory.

And there, too, you reacted immediately and cordoned off a large area.

Difficulty repairing the damage due to the high altitude

Today, a few weeks later, the danger has not yet been averted, reports church caretaker Siegfried Rummel when asked by our newspaper.

The reason: The place where the plaster has come loose can only be reached with great effort.

"We're talking about a height of 21 meters," explains Rummel.

You couldn't do anything here without a lifting platform.

On top of that, according to the requirements of the Archbishop's Ordinariate, only a bricklayer or painter certified for listed buildings is allowed to lay hands on the church tower.

And because the costs will exceed the threshold of 5,000 euros, three offers have to be obtained.

This has now happened.

But since the companies are currently working to capacity due to the order situation in the trade, it will probably take some time before the damage is repaired at a lofty height.

"But we hope that it will work before winter," says Rummel.

Are the bells to blame?

Research into the causes of why the plaster has loosened in the first place is even more difficult. "So far we could only look at it with binoculars," reports the church caretaker. Rumel cannot really imagine that it is only due to the influences of wind and weather. Pastor Michael Mannhardt, as a proven bell expert, has a different theory: He suspects that the vibrations of the bells are responsible for the damage, explains Rummel. This would be supported by the fact that the belfry consists of iron girders that transmit the vibrations to the masonry. Both the large Maria Dolorosa bell hung in 1948 and the Antonius bell added in a donation campaign by the former parish priest Axel Meulemann are connected to the wall at this point in the tower.“So there could be a connection,” says Rummel.

One need not worry about the statics and thus also about the festive bells of the parish church, emphasizes the church caretaker.

When the plaster is renewed, the situation will continue to be closely monitored.

And ultimately, the moment of shock for Sieglinde Rosner showed that the protective coat of the Virgin Mary still rests over the parish church.
