Russia has arrested the head of a research institute specializing in ultrasound technology in Moscow on suspicion of treason, the TASS news agency reported today (Thursday) from a source involved in the investigation.
According to the report, Russia's federal security service will ask the court to keep him in custody for two months.
The suspect was identified as Alexander Kornov, who according to his profile on the institute's website is an expert in supersonic technology.
Russia, whose relations with the West have deteriorated since 2014 to an unprecedented low since the end of the Cold War, has developed several supersonic weapons in recent years.
President Vladimir Putin boasted that "they are second to none."
At the same time, several scientists, soldiers and officials have been accused of treason in recent years in the transfer of sensitive materials to foreign countries.
Kremlin critics argue that the allegations are generally unfounded and cannot be examined because they are classified.
