New South Wales Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian announced today that she will call in additional members of the military to ensure compliance with lockdown rules in Sydney as the highly contagious Delta strain spreads to parts of the state.
"We are trying to ensure that we are sparing no effort in terms of additional military resources," Berejiklian told a news conference in the state capital, Sydney, according to Reuters.
The move comes at a time when the Australian capital, Canberra, announced a sudden closure for a week, starting this evening, after it recorded the first local infection with Covid 19 disease in more than a year.
Australia is struggling to contain the fast-spreading delta strain that has led to strict closures in Sydney and Melbourne, but despite the seven-week closure in Sydney, daily cases are still close to record levels.
