Again, the Emmy Awards will have to adapt to the covid-19 crisis.
The ceremony of the 73rd edition of the television awards maintains its scheduled date, September 19, and can be seen in the United States through the CBS network, but has decided to change some of its broadcast plans.
'The Crown' and 'The Mandalorian' lead 2021 Emmy nominations
Although it was originally planned to be held indoors with a limited number of attendees, the American Television Academy decided this Tuesday to take place outdoors, in front of the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, according to the institution in a communicated on its website. These changes also affect the pre-awards ceremonies for the Creative Emmy Awards, focused on technical categories and to be held on the 11th and 12th of the same month.
In addition to changing its location, precautionary measures against the pandemic will also affect capacity. “Following discussions with Los Angeles County health and safety experts, the Academy has concluded that we must further limit the number of nominees who will attend. Now they will be reduced to no more than four entries per nomination. Unfortunately, this means that not all the nominees will be able to attend this year's awards ”, announced the institution, highlighting its concern about the consequences in the country of the delta variant of the virus.
When the candidacies were announced in mid-July, the number of new daily cases in Los Angeles was around 1,000 affected, but the upward curve in these weeks means that the figure has shot up to 3,498 new cases on Wednesday 11 August, according to the Public Health website of this county, the most populous in the United States with 10 million inhabitants.
The Crown
(Netflix) and
The Mandalorian
(Disney +) are the series that top the nominations this year, with 24 nominations each.
In general figures, the 2021 Emmys are presented as an even battle between HBO and Netflix.
With 130 and 129 nominations respectively, the payment channel and the digital platform lead, in the quantitative aspect, the fight for the awards.
