The Labor Party conference today (Thursday) approved the proposal of the party's chairman, Merav Michaeli, to change the party's constitution and anchor the status of party functionaries so that their right to elect the chairman and members of the list in the primaries cannot be denied.

Michaeli's proposal is intended to weaken the powers of the Labor Party Conference, a small body of about 4,000 members, and to transfer the power to a new body to be established, in which all members will function, in the name of the members' plenum.

The move is a lesson from the struggle that Michaeli waged last year against former Labor chairman Amir Peretz, who tried to cancel the primaries and hold elections for chairman and list at the conference.

In addition, the conference approved Michaeli's proposal to add about 300 new delegates to the conference, as part of the implementation of a decision to apply gender equality in all work institutions.

Michaeli's proposals were approved at the conference, but according to sources at work, this is a gap of only dozens of votes, in light of the opposition led by the party's secretary general, Eran Hermoni, to moves to change the constitution. the central institution working party, and democratic institutions and meaningful. "it is a death blow to democracy in the party."

Hermony, secretary general of the party since the times of the chairman Peretz, is in great tension in front Michaeli and is considered a contrarian, but he was able to muster considerable support among Conference members who clashed to cut back on their powers, but not enough to topple Michaeli's proposals.

Michaeli welcomed the approval of the proposals and said that "the Labor Party is today the most democratic party in the center-left camp and in Israeli politics in general, and today, we made it even more democratic. The decisions we passed at the party conference today, thanks to you, "Democracy, we also strengthened the equality between us, because true democracy is true equality. Joy for the expression of trust of my group and members of the faction, and of course, for the trust you gave me and you when you voted in favor."

In response to the conference results, Hermoni said he was "proud of the line I led against the undemocratic proposals of party chairman Minister Merav Michaeli, and proud of at least 48% of conference members who supported my position, stood firm and did not succumb to an aggressive pressure campaign.

This is a very special event in the Labor Party that the chairman almost lost a vote at the conference. The party's territory sent a clear message to the party leadership. For days and under every chairman.
