Christa Schmitter (78) and her husband may only have a few days left together.

However, her visits to the hospital present the Eglfingerin with many challenges.

Murnau / Eglfing

- Christa Schmitters husband is sick.

Fatally ill.

“It's whole.

really bad, ”says the 78-year-old from Eglfing.

How else should you express it when your partner is on the verge of death after 55 years of marriage?

On his last days and weeks, she wants to be by his side as best she can and visits him every day at the clinic in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

"I won't leave him alone," emphasizes Christa Schmitter - even if the corona requirements throw many a stick between her legs.

The clinic requires visitors to have the latest corona test every day - including those who have been vaccinated twice

The clinic requires its visitors to take a current corona test every day.

Also from those who, like Christa Schmitter, have already been vaccinated twice.

“That doesn't help you at all,” she says.

So the Eglfinger first drove day after day either to her family doctor in Obersöchering or to the test station of the Echter branch in Murnauer Markt, before going on to the hospital in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

A lot of driving, without question.

“But it was fine,” she says.

However, both her family doctor and the Echter boutique recently stopped testing due to low demand.

Since then, Schmitter's situation has changed drastically.

Corona test center: Appointments can only be made online - "I'm not familiar with this stuff"

At her new point of contact, the Murnau test center on the Volksfestplatz, the 78-year-old can no longer just drop by without prior notification.

If you want to be examined for the Covid pathogen, you have to reserve an appointment via an online portal.

Mandatory, with no alternative.

"When I asked whether it would work without the Internet, they sent me home again," says Schmitter.

Her problem: The Eglfingerin has never used the Internet, let alone owned a smartphone.

"I don't know anything about all that stuff."

The woman wants to visit a terminally ill man in a clinic - Corona rules pose a challenge to her

So that she can continue to visit her seriously ill husband in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, she receives support from her son-in-law.

He is currently getting her an appointment every day at the test station, where Schmitter can also be examined.

Then she drives back to Eglfing, where her son-in-law first gets the result sent to her cell phone and then prints it out into her hand.

Then Schmitter gets back in the car and drives to the clinic.

Day after day.

An almost unbelievable effort.

Germany boss of the Corona test center - "Something like that simply shouldn't be"

But that should now be the end of it. When asked by the daily newspaper, Matthias Mauermann, the Germany boss of the Murnau test center operator intervivos, spoke up yesterday afternoon. “Something like that should simply not be allowed,” he clarifies in view of Christa Schmitter's situation. He will immediately ensure that the station in Murnau is equipped with laptops and a printer so that customers who do not have access to a smartphone can also provide proof of this on site. A waiting time of around 15 minutes per person between the test and the result is included, of course.

He cannot give a precise answer as to why this has not already been the case.

"Perhaps the problem has only become so acute since there are hardly any test facilities in the region," Mauermann suspects.

His promise: "Murnau will be up and running by Thursday at the latest."

Great news for Christa Schmitter and possibly other older people with similar problems.

“That makes a lot of things easier for me and my family,” she emphasizes.

One can only hope that she and her husband will have as much time as possible to benefit from the new option.

Or as the Eglfingerin says: “Every single day counts.

Really everyone. "
