Once again authorized on an experimental basis in around twenty departments, inter-line traffic must comply with a certain number of

Bikers and scooter enthusiasts, keep an eye out.

By the end of the year, new signs framing the movement of motorized two-wheelers between the lines should flourish along the expressways in Ile-de-France.

A decree of August 13 enshrines the arrival of new signage aimed at controlling inter-lane traffic, reinstated since August 2 on an experimental basis in around twenty departments, including those of Ile-de-France.

Objective: "To inform both users of motorized two- and three-wheelers and the drivers of other vehicles who share the road with them about this practice," announced the Ministry of the Interior on Friday.

From the end of 2021, new, purely indicative signs will be gradually installed on certain roads concerned by the inter-lane traffic experiment.

"Their presence does not condition the experiment, which was initiated on August 2, 2021 for a period of 3 years", specifies the ministry.

The decree published in the Official Journal provides road managers, responsible for implementing this decree, with all the technical characteristics (format, location, panel size).

This is what the new signs will look like framing the movement of motorized two-wheelers between the lines on the expressways.

On the sections concerned, motorcyclists will have to comply with the three inter-lane traffic rules: "The maximum authorized speed in inter-lane traffic (50 km / h), practice only on congested lanes and positioning between the two lanes furthest to the left of the roadway.

"

50 km / h maximum

There is no question of exceeding 50 km / h when driving between two lines of cars, with a maximum difference of 30 km / h with vehicles passed.

Concretely, when the traffic is at a standstill, motorcycles and scooters should therefore not travel above 30 km / h.

Another obligation: never pass another motorized two-wheeler in the inter-lane and refrain in the event of bad weather conditions (snow, ice).

A previous experiment launched in 2016 ended in February 2021, causing incomprehension among users of motorized two-wheelers in Ile-de-France, where this practice is extremely widespread.

But speeding and a poor record in terms of accidentology had led to an overhaul of this experimental device.

As a reminder, 21 departments are concerned by the experiment launched this summer for a period of three years: Bouches-du-Rhône, Haute-Garonne, Gironde, Hérault, Isère, Loire-Atlantique, North, the Rhône, the Var, the Alpes-Maritimes, the Drôme, the Vaucluse, the Pyrénées-Orientales and the departments of the Ile-de-France region. Only motorways and expressways with separate carriageways are concerned.
