A research team from the USA therefore looked at how well the two mRNA vaccines Biontech / Pfizer and Moderna work against the virus variant.
The study results were published in the online archive "medRxiv" and show that Moderna should probably provide better protection against the corona virus.
US study: higher protection at Moderna?
For the study, researchers compared data from a total of 50,000 test subjects from the state of Minnesota.
25,000 of them received a vaccination with Moderna or Biontech, the other half were unvaccinated.
Scientists recognized that both vaccines had an excellent effect against the coronavirus, but that it was significantly smaller in the Delta variant.
According to the study, the vaccine from Moderna reduces the individual risk of infection by 86 percent, with Biontech the risk is reduced by 76 percent.
In connection with the delta variant, however, this difference is significantly greater, according to the research team.
They observed that in Minnesota between May and July, the proportion of the delta mutant rose from 0.7 to over 70 percent.
At the same time, it was shown that the Moderna vaccine only reduced the risk of infection by 76 percent during this period, while the Biontech vaccine was 42 percent.
It therefore seems obvious to the researchers that the weakening of the protection against infection can be traced back to the appearance of the virus variant.
Vaccine study: investigations ongoing
Whether the vaccine from Biontech really works worse against Delta than Moderna can still not be conclusively answered, according to the scientists.
They do not rule out that there are also other possible influencing factors on the fall in protection against infection.
For example, the study did not take into account how long ago the last vaccination was.
Scientists now agree that the effectiveness of the corona vaccines in the Delta variant differs from the wild type of the virus.
