The long-span footbridge between Hoi Ying Village and Hoi Tat Village in Sham Shui Po was officially opened today (13th). It is the longest-span footbridge among public housing estates in Hong Kong.

The reporter of "Hong Kong 01" tried out the new pedestrian bridge and the old bridge respectively, and measured the journey time from Haida Village to Haiying Village.

Although the new pedestrian bridge travels between the two villages directly and the whole journey is smooth and easy, the waiting time for the elevator is longer due to the need to take the elevator to connect.

On the contrary, the original old road using the old flyover has a more tortuous journey with up and down slopes.

However, taking into account the time spent waiting for the lifts using the new flyover, the time required to travel between the two villages using the new flyover and the old flyover is similar.

However, many neighbours praised the new flyover and expressed their satisfaction. Although the time required to use the two bridges is similar, because the new bridge is connected by a lift, there is no need to sun or rain, making it more convenient to go to the market or go to school in the future.

Some residents bluntly said "Super invincible and satisfied!"

The new footbridge connecting Haida Village and Haiying Village is about 145 meters long and 6 meters wide.

As far as the scene can be seen, most of the flyover is surrounded by barbed wire, and underneath is the busy West Kowloon Highway.

There is another flyover near the new flyover that connects the two sides, but the height is relatively low, and it is located under the West Kowloon Highway.

The reporter used the new bridge and the old bridge to measure the journey time from Haida Village to Haiying Village, starting with the Haida Village Property Service Office and ending at the location closest to Haiying Village.

It takes about 7 minutes if the time of the two is similar

If you use the new sky bridge to connect, you must take the elevator to the 5th floor after arriving at Haida Village and walk through a certain platform before you reach the sky bridge.

After reaching the end of the overpass, residents have to take a lift and descend from the 7th floor to the ground to reach Haiying Village.

Taking into account the waiting time for the lift, the whole journey takes about 7 minutes.

If the new flyover is not used, but the old road with a shorter flyover is used, the journey from Haida Village to Haiying Village will also take about 7 minutes, which is similar to the journey time using the new flyover.

However, the route of the old flyover is relatively roundabout and there are slight up and down ramps. The elderly or people with reduced mobility may be relatively strenuous, while the new flyover is relatively flat and connected by elevators, so it is more convenient.

However, it is worth noting that the waiting time is longer because the new bridge currently has to be lifted up and down.

There are only two lifts in Haida Village and three in Haiying Village.

If there are a lot of people, residents may have to line up to get in. Pay attention to peak hours.

In addition, there are restrictions on the operating hours of the new bridge, specifying that it will only be open from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Resident: Super invincible and satisfied

Wong Wing Wai, the community director who serves the district, said that Hoi Ying Village and Kai Lok Court are located in the northwest Kowloon reclaimed area. In the past, the only entrances and exits were MTR Nan Cheong Station and the old flyover. Now that the new flyover is built, the neighbourhood can easily reach the large bus stops, Market etc.

He also pointed out that although the new bridge is connected by a lift, it will be closed at 12 o'clock in the evening, so it is necessary to observe the usage flow in the future.

Mr. Shi, a resident of Haiying Village, said that the new flyover will facilitate future life and it will be more convenient to access bus stations, markets and other facilities.

He explained that in the past, although the journey time was similar, it took a lot of circles, sun and rain to get in and out of the old bridge. Unlike the new bridge, which has a lift connection, he was very satisfied.

Little friend Deng, who lives in Haiying Village, also praised the convenience. In the past, he had to go to the old flyover before going to school, but the old bridge is more roundabout. Now the new flyover can lead directly to the opposite side.

Little friend Huang also said that he would go to school and shop near Haida Village on weekdays. "(New bridge) is only 3 minutes away, and the old bridge takes at least 5 minutes...Super invincible satisfaction!"
