The first heat wave of the summer gives no respite in Spain. Temperatures exceed 40º in large areas of the Peninsula and even reach 46º in some places. This Friday began with an extremely warm morning. At midnight, some parts of Andalusia exceeded 33 degrees: the city of Jaén has been all night above 30 degrees. Throughout the day they have exceeded 40º in a good part of the Peninsula. Córdoba, where 46º is expected to be reached or exceeded, can stay close to its record, which is the highest temperature ever measured in Spain in a main network observatory, 46.9º in 2017. In Montoro (Córdoba) , 46.1º degrees have been reached, according to data from the Aemet updated at four in the afternoon.

The forecasts keep the Cordoba countryside under red notice, as well as the Sevillian countryside and the rest of the Guadalquivir valley in the province of Jaén;

44º are expected in these last two areas.

During the afternoon the maximum risk warning was activated also in the Genil-Granada basin area, Guadix and Baza-Granada and Morena and Condado-Jaén.

Even so, the worst is yet to come: the spokesman for the meteorological agency, Rubén Del Campo, has warned that this Saturday will probably be the most adverse day and one of the hottest in recent years.

On August 10 like today, but in 2012, it was the warmest day in our country, at least since 1941. Let's hope that when the next episode of #OlaDeCalor ends, the record will still stand. Https://t.co/ qtKS2Fk15k pic.twitter.com/wqcsYFE80F

This Friday the heat is spreading in the valleys of the great peninsular rivers and in the plateau areas.

40º are surpassed or exceeded in the Ebro basin, in isolated points of the northern plateau and the Balearic Islands and in the center and south of the peninsula.

In Madrid it could reach 40º, and 42º in Badajoz and Toledo.

Throughout the country, temperatures will continue to be between five and ten degrees above normal, a figure that will be even higher in parts of the Pyrenees and Andalusia.

Temperatures are also increasing in the Canary Islands, with maximums above 35º in the south of Gran Canaria.

To find a cooler environment you have to travel to the shores of the Cantabrian Sea, where it will not exceed 25º or 27º.

This Saturday will probably be the hottest day of the week.

Once again, we will have to endure a hot morning, since the thermometers will not drop below 25º in the areas with the highest maximums on Friday.

During the day they will continue to exceed 40º in the north-east central and southern half, and it is possible that 42º will be exceeded not only in the Tajo, Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys –where they could be around 46º again–, but also in areas from the south of the Valencian Community and Murcia.

In the Canary Islands it will exceed 37º in the eastern islands and 35º in the western ones.

For this Saturday, the agency has activated the maximum level of risk in four communities: Andalusia, Aragon, Catalonia and the Valencian Community.

At the high temperatures, during the weekend it is possible that dry storms add, that is, those that leave little rainfall, and are accompanied by strong gusts of wind and lightning that increase the risk of forest fires.

These phenomena will be isolated, but will be concentrated mainly in the eastern half of the peninsula.

A thermometer shows 56 degrees on a Madrid street, this Friday, on the third day of the heat wave.

On Sunday, temperatures will drop in the northern third due to the arrival of fresh winds from the north and northwest. However, this relief will hardly be noticeable by one or two degrees in the rest of the interior of the Peninsula, where temperatures will rise in areas of the south of the Valencian Community, Murcia and south and in the east of Andalusia. Here the early morning will continue to be suffocating and the maximums will exceed 40º approximately in the same areas as the previous day: more than 42º are expected in the Guadiana valley, in the south of Castilla-La Mancha and in the Valencian Community, in the interior of Murcia and more than 44º in the Guadalquivir valley. If the forecasts were fulfilled, for three consecutive days this valley would be around 45º. In the Canary Islands, the thermometers will exceed 39º in the eastern islands and more than 37º in the western ones. The haze will be noticeable and,In addition to worsening air, visibility could be reduced.

Already on Monday, the drop in temperatures will be noticeable in the northern half and in the Mediterranean communities, but the effects of the heat wave will still be felt. In the northeast and south central of the Peninsula, high temperatures will be registered: 40º in areas of the center and south of the peninsula, 42º or 44º again in the Guadalquivir and southern Andalusia, as well as in the Canary Islands, with 38º and 40º degrees in the islands. On Tuesday temperatures will drop throughout Spain, including the Canary Islands. It is expected to reach 35º in the southwest quadrant of the Peninsula and in points of the northeast and in the Canary Islands, although it will still touch 40º in the Guadalquivir.

Finally, Wednesday will return to normal, with usual temperatures for this time of year, perhaps somewhat cooler in the northern third. It will still be hot in the center and southern half, but not as hot as these days. In the middle of next week, the arrival of humid winds from the Mediterranean could cause showers in the Mediterranean regions.
