The Koschwitz couple lost their Mercedes in a fire in the garage - the car burned out completely.

Now the insurance does not want to pay.

Munich - The pictures were terrifying.

On Friday, June 4th, a large cloud of smoke rose over the east of Munich *.

A car repair shop in Trudering was on fire *.

The damage was immense.

It should be over a million euros - after all, around 20 cars burned out completely in the fire.

Also the Mercedes GLC 250d from the Koschwitz family.

There was only a meager remnant left of him.

Several glasses, a smartphone and everything else in the car were also engulfed in the flames.

A shock for Siegfried Koschwitz (82) and his wife Karin (82).

Fire in Trudering: The Koschwitz were informed by the newspaper

What followed next almost drove them both insane.

They found out about the fire from the newspaper.

“Nobody informed us or offered us help,” complains Siegfried Koschwitz.

The 82-year-old is upset.

He feels like he is in a madhouse and is disappointed with how he was treated by the workshop and the Daimler group.

The workshop defends itself against these allegations.

Her lawyer emphasizes that there was a telephone notification from the workshop on the Sunday after the fire.

In addition, there was a conversation between those responsible for the workshop and the Koschwitz family at the scene of the accident on Monday.

The pensioners bought the Mercedes as a used car almost four years ago.

“Our children live from Hamburg to Geneva.

We wanted to get there well over the past few years - and above all get on comfortably, ”says Koschwitz.

The car had to go to the workshop for warranty work.

A chip was broken.

The value of the Mercedes was around 31,600 euros.

Now everything is gone.

Fire in Trudering: The insurance only pays if there is someone responsible

Now the question arises: who has to pay? The workshop's insurance is no longer an issue and does not see itself as being responsible. “We are stunned,” says Koschwitz. How is it possible that you have to take care of your car yourself when you give it to the workshop? That is quite normal, says Sascha Straub, lawyer and insurance expert at the consumer center in Bavaria, about the behavior of the insurance company. The expert explains: “The decisive question is: who is to blame, whether intentionally or negligently?” Only when this has been clarified can someone be held liable. An employee's negligence, sloppy maintenance, damage to another car ... the possibilities are numerous. “It takes a responsibility,” says Straub. Otherwise you will be left with the damage. "Life risk" is what the lawyer calls it.Comparable: If you park your car in a parking lot while hiking and it is damaged by the hail. Straub advises that a lawyer should be consulted in such cases.

And that is exactly what Siegfried Koschwitz did. For him it is clear: "A fire does not just start like that." But the injured party must first prove that. "The investigation is ongoing," said the police *. "As in many other workshops, hazardous materials were also stored in the workshop," they say. This favored the spread of the fire. So it can take months, if not years, to close the case. For now, Siegfried Koschwitz's partially comprehensive insurance will take effect. After all, he already has a new car.
