Odelzhausen

- It is Thursday evening, around 5.30 p.m .: Sascha Bilek is on his way home from his military service in Dillingen * when a mobile home starts to wobble in front of him on Autobahn 8 near Odelzhausen (Dachau district).

Blown tire.

The driver, a 67-year-old pensioner from Belgium, loses control of the car, the motorhome tips on its side and remains between the hard shoulder and the right-hand lane *.

Accident on the A8: Soldier pulls one accident victim out of the mobile home

The 29-year-old soldier who followed him from the Walleshausen district of Geltendorf in the Landsberg district reacted immediately.

He is a trained car mechanic and was a member of the fire department himself.

He knows what to do.

He stops his car and runs to the overturned motorhome, from which white smoke is already rising.

In addition to the 67-year-old man, his 65-year-old wife, a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old are on board.

“I tried to make it clear to the driver that he should kick in the windshield so that everyone could get outside.” But that doesn't work, and the vehicle occupants don't speak German.

So change of plan: Sascha Bilek climbs onto the overturned car and pulls one passenger after the other out of the side window.

Accident on the A8: A few minutes after the rescue, the flames break out of the car

Other first aiders are also on site, as Bilek reports.

A Pole lends him a hand on the trailer.

A young woman alerts the police.

A doctor takes care of the accident victims who have been pulled out.

And another Bundeswehr comrade who happened to be present directs the traffic on the busy autobahn as well as possible past the scene of the accident.

"When we pulled people out, the smoke got darker and darker," says Bilek.

Now, he knows, it has to be done quickly.

A few minutes after the first responders pulled the passengers out of the accident vehicle, the flames beat out of the car.

As the police noted in their accident report yesterday, the quick intervention of the first aiders was "absolutely right and necessary".

The caravan burns out completely, the surrounding fire brigades need several hours for use, the motorway has to be completely closed in the meantime in the direction of Munich.

Accident on the A8: The accident victims get away with bruises and abrasions

The accident ended relatively lightly for the Belgian family.

She had to spend the night in the Fürstenfeldbruck Clinic instead of in the sunny holiday destination of Austria.

But they got away with mild smoke inhalation, bruises, and abrasions.

Sascha Bilek only really realized that the rescue operation was not without risk when everyone had been rescued from the car. "The adrenaline has dropped a bit and you start to brood," he says. Still, he would do it again anytime. “That everything went well was because everyone helped together very well,” says the sergeant. When he told his wife about his day at home, she put a cool shandy on the table to calm him down.
