The sculptor and painter Yigal Tumarkin was laid to rest Israel today

The Israeli painter, sculptor and decorator Yigal Tumarkin was laid to rest today (Friday) at Kibbutz Naan.

Tumarkin, winner of the Israel Prize for Sculpture in 2004, passed away yesterday at the age of 87, and is considered one of the greatest artists who influenced Israeli art.

He created dozens of sculptures and monuments that were placed in the country.

Dor Tumarkin, the son of the late artist, praised him: "Much has been said and said about your genius. You will be missed by many and your influence on art will be felt forever. You have chosen to create until your last day with special sensitivity to you.

"Our relationship has never been classic, you never came to parent meetings and played football. Instead you taught us physics and math and took us on a journey around the world. It wasn't always easy, with your damn illness, it changed us all. You were a fairy tale in your life, genius, thorn "I love you, Dad."

After him, his younger brother, the actor Ion Tumarkin, said goodbye.

"Excuse me for not having the strength to talk about art," the son said in a broken voice.

"I can mostly speak my immense pride rose every time I come across his works, which will continue to be here after and after me. They will remind me of him every day and bring me down to a tear but bring up a smile.

"Dad took care of our cultural wealth and took us on trips around the world. It was a home of culture, art, knowledge and discourse.

"All my life they have asked me what it's like to grow up with an older father. I hear the criticism, so I'll tell you - make children as long as it feels right to you. What matters is that you love your children, and invest in what you love.

"It's shit to say goodbye to Dad at 32 and dine with him, but I love my Dad and thank him from the bottom of my soul for everything he has given me."

Protestant art

Tumarkin's art shows expressions of cultural and anti-war protest and deep involvement in Israeli culture in all its forms.

Among his well-known works: the sculpture "He Walked in the Fields" (1967) and "A Monument to the Holocaust and Resurrection" (1975).

Tumarkin was born Peter Martin Gregor Heinrich Halberg in 1933 in Dresden, Germany, and immigrated to Eretz Israel with his mother when he was two years old.

He grew up first in Tel Aviv and later in Bat Yam.

After his release from the IDF, he studied with the sculptor Rudy Lehmann in Ein Hod for about a year. "Van" (1940). He returned to Israel in 1960 and began exhibiting his works in Israel. In his works, the influence of pop and avant-garde protest art is prominent.

Tumarkin has a daughter, Orna, from his first wife Naomi;

And two sons, Dor and Yon Tumarkin, from his second wife, Naama.
