She called for a “Citizens' Council on Climate”.

Unterschleißheim

- After a long Corona break, “Fridays for Future” Schleißheim again called for a demo.

25 participants moved from the Valentinspark via the Rathausplatz to the Lohwald Playground.

“The climate issue is one of the most important issues of all,” says demo participant Werner Stockhausen from Unterschleißheim.

Climate change has massive effects, including on our doorstep.

How can Germany still achieve the goals of the Paris climate protection agreement?

"Climate protection should concern the cross-section of the population somewhat"

Well thought-out measures that do not divide the population, but are supported by many, are now important, Bernhard Schüßler from the “Fridays for Future” local group is convinced.

"Climate protection should concern the cross-section of the population," says the 21-year-old.

He would like a faster pace and more citizen participation in climate protection.

The political science student has therefore invited the physicist Wolfgang Scheffler to Unterschleißheim, who is involved in “Scientists for Future” and initiates citizens' councils.

After the demo, a few participants remain for the Citizens' Council premiere.

Led by Scheffler, they embark on a test of the method that should involve citizens in the search for solutions.

The participants in the citizens 'council will be drawn by the residents' registration office.

You gain knowledge of individual subject areas from experts and are allowed to ask questions.

Then they exchange ideas and discuss in small groups - often accompanied by a moderator.

The small groups are mixed again and again over four days - at the end, recommendations for action are agreed and passed on to politicians.

Not parties or institutions that are interested in climate protection anyway, but a randomly mixed group discusses social, economic and ecological aspects. Scheffler is convinced that wrong approaches would quickly be exposed in the Citizens' Council. “The common good and common sense prevail, which is where we get ahead,” says the 64-year-old. “The procedure is transparent and clear,” Scheffler sees another advantage in this, which strengthens trust in the measures. Because setting the course should be shared by everyone. “The method has been used 160 times in Germany so far,” he reports. The city of Munich also uses this instrument of citizen participation for the “Posthalle” theme.

The small group at the Lohwald playground formulated the wish for more information on climate protection and that the Unterschleißheim youth advisory council should campaign for a “Citizens' Council on Climate”.

“The Citizens' Council is our way from 'Fridays for Future' Schleißheim to discuss and coordinate climate policy measures in the city,” says Schüßler, “because we don't have that much time”.

You have to take action if you want to achieve the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees.

His hope is that the idea for a “Citizens' Council on Climate” will also attract wider circles in Unterschleißheim.
