Professor Mingzhong Zhu of the Department of Physics joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1995 and was awarded the Long Service Award this year. He spent 25 years at CUHK and has won numerous awards in academic research.

The Daya Bay Neutrino Oscillation Experiment was carried out in 2003, and he was awarded the title of Academician by the American Physical Society three years ago in recognition of his contribution to physics research.

In addition to academic research, Professor Zhu attaches great importance to teacher-student relations and does not want to be separated from students. He considers himself a friend. He describes doing research as "lonely", because more innovative research often lacks people to communicate with and teaches. It became a channel for him to share his unique ideas with others, believing that research and education complement each other and both are indispensable.

Hope that every student will find the ideal job

For many years, I have met students of various forms, but Professor Zhu Mingzhong believes that the students of CUHK are generally simple, frank and easy to get along with. Therefore, the time inside and outside the classroom is very happy. This has not changed in 25 years.

Professor Zhu described the former students as being more "romantic", and their job hunting was based on interest as the primary consideration. However, in recent years, students are under a lot of pressure, and they often calculate how to take one step faster, which is believed to be related to the fierce social and academic competition.

However, he believes that this concept and atmosphere violates academic principles. He does not mind that students engage in non-physics-related jobs after graduation, but hopes that every student will find the ideal job in his mind.

Zhu Mingzhong also attaches great importance to experiential learning and often coordinates overseas exchange activities.

The door is open for a long time, ready to listen to students' complaints

Students are the biggest driving force for Zhu Mingzhong's work. The door of his office has been open for a long time, so he can talk to him at any time.

Zhu Mingzhong said that sometimes students complained to him under pressure, he would listen patiently, hoping to make students understand that they are not facing alone, someone has always been behind them to support them.

He lamented that Hong Kong's education culture often frustrated students and should let students know that they are actually very "strong".

Universities and colleges have suspended face-to-face courses due to epidemic prevention measures, and most major courses have been taught by Zoom. Professor Zhu laughed and said that he seemed to be teaching against a "black hole", which had more or less impact on student performance. He believed that face-to-face interaction with students is The most precious thing in teaching.

He also believes that communication experience can help students digest knowledge better than explaining theory, so he often organizes experiential learning activities, such as leading students to dialogue with international researchers and stargazing in famous planetariums around the world.

Boldly launch the "Neutrino Oscillation Experiment"

Speaking of his most profound academic research, Professor Zhu believes that it is the Daya Bay Neutrino Oscillation Experiment. He is one of the initiators of the experiment. After the 9/11 incident in the United States, this type of experiment that needs to be carried out near nuclear power plants is not popular, but Hong Kong It was located near Daya Bay, so it was still "audacious" to carry out the project despite lack of funds. The research carried out so far has a critical impact on the scientific community's understanding of the evolution of the universe.

This research reminded Professor Zhu of many students in the Department of Physics. He wanted to seek voluntary help from students during the preliminary research. As a result, many students were very enthusiastic to sign up. We did research, and he performed very well, and other scholars praised him for being comparable to Harvard students."

CUHK's "human touch" longed to teach until I couldn't bear it

Professor Zhu Mingzhong studied abroad at the university level. He remembered why he decided to return to Hong Kong to teach at the beginning. He came back to Hong Kong once when he was standing at the bus stop and looking at the public housing in the distance. A sense of belonging suddenly came to his heart, thinking that he belonged here, and later with local classmates. The exchanges made him feel more cordial. He has been coaching at CUHK for four centuries for a century. It is all because he loves the "human touch" of CUHK. Everywhere he goes, he is full of old friends. When ordering, he has a silent understanding with the boss and a group of lovely people. s student.

He plans to continue to teach in Hong Kong after he retires. "I don't dare to teach at Zhongda University, but I hope I can teach it until I can talk about it."
