The Indian Embassy in Damascus held a reception this evening on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of India's independence at the Dama Rose Hotel.

Indian Ambassador in Damascus Mahinder Singh Kanyal affirmed in his speech that relations between India and Syria are old since the declaration of independence of the two countries, and during this period there was cooperation in a number of fields, pointing out that during the coming period more agreements and memoranda of understanding will be signed to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

He pointed out his country's commitment to expand its technical, humanitarian and development support to Syria and its continuation in building capabilities and skills for Syrian human resources according to the country's needs and requirements, pointing out the need for the two friendly countries to explore opportunities for comprehensive economic growth in the interest of their peoples.

In his speech, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Bashar Al-Jaafari referred to the cultural interdependence between Syria and India and their struggle against colonialism as part of the global liberation movement, pointing to the cooperation and coordination between the two countries in international forums and within the framework of the Non-Aligned Movement, which strengthened the bonds of bonds between the two countries, especially Concerning the preservation of the rights and interests of the peoples of developing countries.

Al-Jaafari affirmed India's always supportive position for Arab issues and Syria's right to restore the occupied Golan and establish a just and comprehensive peace in the region, which reflects the high level of coordination between our two countries in the international arenas, explaining that since the beginning of the crisis in Syria, India has stood by the truth and adhered to the principle of non-interference in Syria's internal affairs. It refused to engage in any activity that would limit its sovereignty, indicating that India had provided Syria with technical support and many scholarships for Syrian students, in addition to sending relief materials.

Al-Jaafari pointed out that there is a desire on the part of Syria and various countries of the world for India to play a greater role in the international arena to defend the principles of truth and international law in the face of attempts to dominate the world.

In a statement to reporters, Al-Jaafari stressed that Syria has many commonalities with India and a solid historical relationship that has not been shaken at all at any stage, and Syria is proud of this relationship, indicating that India is a large country that has achieved a lot of scientific progress, which made it immune to Western pressures, as it is not subject to external dictates in general. The Indian people, with their pride, were able to defeat the most powerful colonialism in the world, represented by the British colonialism.

The ceremony, which included the screening of a documentary film about India, was attended by Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr. Bassam Ibrahim and Culture Dr. Lubana Mushouh, a member of the central leadership of the Arab Socialist Baath Party Mohsen Bilal and Ammar al-Sibai, and a number of ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions accredited in Damascus.
