Homs-Sana

Al-Baath University in Homs seeks to implement renewable energy strategies because of its important economic and environmental repercussions.

Dr. Abdul Basit Al-Khatib, President of the University, told SANA reporter that an agreement was signed with the National Center for Energy Research to install and provide a photovoltaic system with a capacity of 200 kilowatts on the roof of the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, pointing out that work on the project began in November of last year and is now in investment. The warranty period is one year.

He pointed out that the roofs of the buildings in the university were utilized through the installation of the photovoltaic system, which contributed to the production of electricity and injected it into the internal network of the university building and helped to compensate for the shortage of electrical energy and reduce the burden and excess loads on the network, as well as alleviating part of the material burdens paid by the university for electric energy bills. .

Al-Khatib noted the great importance of the Renewable Energies Center at the university in terms of research and science, as it is a partner in preparing the necessary studies for the adoption of renewable energy, pointing out that there are many projects under study at the university to take advantage of renewable energies.

In turn, Dr. Samer Rabie, Director of the Renewable Energies Center at the university, said: “The photovoltaic system on the roof of the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering aims to pump electrical energy to the faculty, as the equivalent of 145 megawatt-hours has been generated since the start of its investment at the beginning of this year until now, and it is composed of 594 pickups. The capacity of each pickup is 330 watts, connected to three inverters, each inverter is 50 kilowatt-hours, which means that the system gives about 700 to 800 kilowatt-hours per day, and it varies sometimes according to weather conditions.”

He pointed out that renewable energies must vary in places according to the environment in which Syria enjoys two types of energy: solar and wind, in addition to the mass of living energy that depends on aerobic and anaerobic fermentation, stressing the need to study the economic and technical feasibility for the success of renewable energy projects. Implementation, maintenance, and any interruption in one of them leads to the failure of the system.

Rabie believed that in the coming years, with the spread of alternative energy, it is necessary to take advantage of its waste, including aluminum frames, glass, and silver devices, to recycle them for other uses.

On the work of the Renewable Energies Center at the university, he confirmed that its scientific research goal is as it carried out many studies at the university level and signed an agreement with the Energy Research Center in 2017, and an agreement also to install the current 200-watt system. He also participated in several internal and external conferences and is currently studying several future projects, including feeding Public squares and utilities, lighting the university wall, feeding the university dormitory and the important amphitheaters through solar energy.

Dr. Rami Moussa, a professor at the University's Department of Electrical Energy Engineering, called for the need to find controls for entering energy supplies and to ensure their quality so that the citizen does not lose the reliability of the performance of the renewable energy system.
