Afghanistan: Emmanuel Macron wants to fight against illegal flows

2021-08-16T19:26:35.638Z

For the President of the Republic, "Afghanistan must not once again become the sanctuary of terrorism that it was".

It is a

“historic turning point”, “a few thousand kilometers from here”.

The day after the Taliban seizure of power in Kabul, Emmanuel Macron wished to deliver a solemn message.

From Fort Brégançon, the Head of State addressed the French, but also

“the Afghan people with whom our ties of friendship are old and deep”

.

"The consequences (will be) major for the entire international community, for Europe, for France"

, he declared.

As the situation deteriorates rapidly in Afghanistan, the need is for

"immediate decisions and initiatives".

With, as an

"absolute"

priority

,

the safety of nationals, as well as that of

"Afghans who worked for France".

After repatriating some 625 employees since July, the executive reports

“dozens of French people”

still present in the territory.

"We are in contact with all the French who want to join the national soil,"

assured the tenant of the Elysee. Two military planes, accompanied by special forces, should be made available

"in the next few hours".

It will then be a question of coming to the aid of

“the many people of Afghan civil society (…) who are now threatened because of their commitment”.

Journalists, rights defenders and even artists will be welcomed

“as much as we can”.

"It is the honor of France to be at the side of the fighters and freedom fighters,"

added Emmanuel Macron.

"The destabilization of Afghanistan is also likely to lead to irregular migratory flows towards Europe",

he also recognized, while the warnings on a possible migratory crisis multiply on the right and in the National Assembly. To face it, France

“will continue to do its duty”

and will take

“all (its) part within the framework of an organized and fair international effort”.

Anxious to provide a common response, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has already called for a virtual meeting of G7 leaders

"in the coming days".

For his part, Emmanuel Macron intends to take

"on behalf of France several initiatives in close connection with other European states and our allies".

The

“fight against irregular flows”

will also be carried out in a

“robust, coordinated and united” manner.

Fight "against obscurantism"

While the Head of State had reserved his last interventions for the health crisis, the defense of

“values”

and

“principles”

motivated a symbolic speech.

The presence of French troops in Afghanistan, instigated by Jacques Chirac in 2001 and interrupted by Nicolas Sarkozy in 2011 and then François Hollande in 2014, has thus been described as a

"fair fight",

carried out with

"honor",

which

"will one day bear fruit. ".

"Everywhere, the establishment of credible political processes is the priority,"

said Emmanuel Macron. Before continuing:

"It is this fundamental principle of our foreign policy that we have applied in Afghanistan."

In memory of the 90 French soldiers who lost their lives on the Afghan ground, the Head of State paid tribute

"to those who fought, to the families of those who died or were seriously injured".

To perpetuate this fight

"against obscurantism"

and

"for freedom",

France's action should therefore continue to make

"Islamist terrorism in all its forms"

the main enemy.

"Afghanistan must not once again become the sanctuary for terrorism that it was,

" warned Emmanuel Macron.

It is a stake for international peace and stability against a common enemy, terrorism and those who support it. ”

"The challenges which Afghans will be confronted with in the coming weeks and months are terrible and immense,"

declared the President of the Republic.

“We French are able to understand it. We, for whom it took centuries of struggle, mistakes, advances and setbacks to build a nation in accordance with the greatest human hopes (…). We know how much these fights are starting over every day,

”he added.

Assuring his support to

"Afghan civil society",

Emmanuel Macron finally assured the Afghan people, and in particular women, their

"right to live in security, freedom and dignity". "The fate of Afghanistan is in her hands but we will remain, fraternally, alongside the Afghan women",

he concluded.
