The New York State Department of Health issued an order Monday requiring all healthcare workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 by Sept. 27, according to a statement issued by the governor's office. outgoing, Andrew Cuomo. The vaccination mandate comes weeks after Cuomo announced that all healthcare workers in contact with patients in state hospitals must be vaccinated without the alternative option of testing.
Now, Cuomo requires that all healthcare workers, including staff in "nursing homes, adult care, and other community care settings" be vaccinated before the September deadline.
"Data and science tell us that vaccinating more people as soon as possible is the best way to keep people safe, prevent more mutations, and allow us to resume our daily routines," said Dr. Howard Zucker, Health Commissioner of the New York State.

Cuomo also said the Department of Health authorized a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued last week.
Those who are not vaccinated represent an important part of the public health workers.
According to Cuomo's office, about 75% of state hospital workers, 74% of state adult care center workers, and 68% of state nursing home workers are fully vaccinated.

His administration was briefed on the vaccination mandate before the announcement, according to the statement.
