The data show that unvaccinated children reported more symptoms of influenza compared to vaccinated children (19.5% vs. 7.7%), and that there was a 60.5% decrease in the onset of symptoms.
Among unvaccinated children, a higher number of doctor visits and school days were lost (35.7% vs. 14.9% and 42.9% vs. 25.6%, respectively).
The rate of flu symptoms among the household of unvaccinated children was 34.5%, compared with 25% among the household of vaccinated children.
The study found that a flu vaccine given at school reduced the rate of flu-like symptoms among all second-graders and their families by 60.5% and 27.5%, respectively, compared with all third-graders.
According to the researchers, expanding the school-based immunization program has increased the public health benefit of flu vaccines among both school children and their family members.
