- Advancing digital policy changes unbureaucratically - that is what the Bundestag member Erich Irlstorfer would like to put right at the top of his agenda.

For a press conference last Friday, he invited the Minister of State to the Chancellor and Federal Government Commissioner for Digitization, Dorothee Bär, to coffee and cake and various initial ideas in Gammelsdorf.

For Irlstorfer it is very clear: data is the currency of the 21st century - and this must be handled sensibly, but also efficiently. Especially with a topic that worries him a lot, namely the area of health and, above all, women's health. Digitization in medicine is now fundamental, according to Irlstorfer, this can be seen in the example of prostate surgery using the Da Vinci procedure. Robotic technologies assist the surgeon in this process, which can significantly reduce subsequent problems such as incontinence.

In the area of women's health, there is still a lot of catching up to do - and that starts with personal medical data and its retrieval from a wide variety of locations. Reason: Interdisciplinary medicine is becoming more and more important for successful treatment, emphasized the Freising specialist in gynecology, obstetrics and gynecological oncology, Dr. Christoph Neuhofer. External findings often arrive at the practice only with a long delay, so that patients have to wait for days in agonizing uncertainty. A digital patient file that the person concerned can release would be a good solution here in order to be able to efficiently access findings as well as the patient history at any time.

Another advantage of such a digital file, according to Neuhofer: The patient could, for example, fill out the extremely important anamnesis in advance and thus minimize further loss of time. The problem with such files, however, is always data protection, but Irlstorfer has a clear opinion: “Digitization must be used to save lives!” In his opinion, blocking by data protection is completely out of place and must be readjusted quickly . Other countries like Finland, so Bär, would not be able to understand the handling of data protection in Germany at all. For them, data economy is the wrong way to go, especially in the field of medicine, which the SPD, among others, is taking.

Rather, Bär advocates a significant strengthening of people's trust in the state.

But what's more: Every federal state interprets the data protection regulations very differently, said Bär.

“Unfortunately,” said Bär, “we are one legislative period too late for all digital issues - even two for health-digital priorities.” According to Bär, the state needs the best IT specialists - that is, to be able to put everything on a stable footing then would have to be paid above the tariff.

Irlstorfer sees an opportunity to finance a digital package through innovation funds, for example.

"We have to move forward now," stressed Irlstorfer, for which Bär assured her full support.

“I didn't expect anything else,” concluded Irlstorfer.
