A day after the Taliban took control of the capital, thousands are trying to flee the country • Chaos at the airport • US announces that its people have been safely evacuated

The Taliban regained control of Afghanistan after Western forces, led by the United States, left the country on Sunday after 20 years.

Early in the morning, the focus of events was Kabul International Airport where tragic images were seen with hundreds of civilians including former government officials trying to flee for their lives on the last planes still left in place.

Witnesses said U.S. military soldiers fired warning shots into the air.

Hundreds of civilians are trying to flee Afghanistan at Kabul International Airport.

At the same time, Secretary of State Secretary Ned Price said this morning that "the evacuation of all embassy staff has now been completed. Embassy personnel are at the Hamid Karzai International Airport compound which is secured by the U.S. military." Afghan military personnel were also seen around the compound.

As mentioned, the mujahideen had already begun to pull at the reins of the country after seizing power centers in the capital, including the presidential palace after (former) President Ashraf Ghani fled and handed over power to the Taliban who declared the "Afghan suit".

Afghan Bismillah Muhammadi, the Afghan defense minister until yesterday, came out harshly against the fleeing president and said: "Tied our hands behind our backs and sold the homeland. To hell with the rich man and his gang," he tweeted angrily.

On the other hand, Mullah Abdul Ghani Brader, number two in the Taliban, said: "We welcome the huge victory to the whole nation especially to the people of Kabul and our mujahideen. We never expected to achieve such a position," he admitted, adding, "This is a test time."

Other Western diplomats are currently trying to leave Afghanistan, including German representatives.

Foreign Minister Heiko Mass has announced that German army paratroopers are making their way to assist in the evacuation.
