Review: realme GT 5G - flagship smartphone at half price | Israel today

2021-08-16T09:38:32.513Z

The realme GT 5G comes in a design that includes a back made of yellow artificial leather, an AMOLED screen and fast charging - more than 60% energy in 15 minutes. On the other hand, in order to lower the price, the company had to compromise on some of its capabilities

Realme works hard to turn its brand into an ecosystem in the local market.

It has already launched many smartphones, smart watches and headphones in the Israeli market, but overseas it also sells smart weights, electric toothbrushes, backpacks, suitcases and security cameras.

In short, there is a chance that similar to Shiomi, we will see the realme in more and more product categories.

The realme GT 5G is its flagship smartphone for this period, as it features a special design and powerful hardware with an affordable price tag for the category.

Design: realme GT - the yellow smartphone

There is no doubt that the realme GT is a smartphone with an interesting design.

This is a device that comes with a rough artificial leather back in a screaming yellow color, it gives a slightly luxurious feel, but it very quickly disappears because of the plastic frame.

You have to really like the color yellow to walk around with this device and whoever loves it, will get a prominent and special device here.

Other data in the design include a reasonable weight of 186 grams with a thickness of 8.4 mm. What is missing here is some protection from water.

Screen: realme GT - Super AMOLED with high image refresh

The realme GT boasts a 6.43-inch screen with 1080 resolution of 2400 pixels with Super AMOLED technology.

On paper it sounds like a great screen, but it does not have the rich depth and hues that some of the more expensive flagship devices offer.

What it does have is an image refresh rate of 120 Hz for smooth motion.

Interface: realme GT - improvements are needed in the interface

realme offers here Android 11 on which the realme UI 2.0 interface is mounted.

This is all in a friendly interface, which offers, among other things, a screenshot of 3 fingers sliding and the news page of Google on the right screen.

What bothered me about the interface was that even though I chose an app drawer, the system still poured all the apps into both the home page and the drawer and created a mess.

Other things to pay attention to, there is no internal option for recording calls, no WiFi Calling at least not in the Partner network that I tested the smartphone on and I also had many problems connecting the device to the Android Auto system in the car.

Hardware: realme GT - 5th generation and good cooling capabilities

In one of my last reviews, I tested the OnePlus 9 Pro 5G which tended to overheat, in the realme GT you can see how the company managed to build a product that would not feel like a hot plate.

realme has integrated in its smartphone a VC stainless steel cooling system that helps optimize the heat dissipation structure of the device, so that at least in my test of use, it did not feel like this phone was heating up.

The realme GT incorporates an up-to-date Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor with 8GB of LPDDR5 working memory and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage (no memory card option).

Like other flagship devices, the fingerprint sensor is integrated under the screen and it responds quickly.

realme has not forgotten to incorporate powerful stereo speakers here as well as 3.5mm headphone jack, support for 5th generation and NFC cellular networks.

Camera: realme GT - good camera, but not at the flagship device level

In the photography category we find an array of 3 sensors: 64 megapixels with autofocus and an f / 1.8 aperture key, an 8 megapixel sensor (119 degrees) with f / 2.3 and a 2 megapixel macro sensor with f / 2.4.

The selfie camera comes with a 16 megapixel sensor with f / 2.5.

realme offers here a main sensor without optical stabilizer, whose absence was felt in the shooting results.

On the other hand, under optimal lighting conditions, you get successful images here with rich colors and a good level of detail.

Also, night photography is not bad at all, it manages to let in a lot of light and display clear colors, but also suffers from various smears.

Apart from optical stabilizer, there is also an optical zoom missing here, but still realme offers in its interface a fast zoom of double 2 or 5. As long as you stay in dual zone 2, the decrease in quality is less noticeable.

When shooting with the wide sensor, rounded edges are obtained with noticeable noises on the sides.

From the selfie camera I was very pleased, the default did not push all sorts of beauty situations that smeared the face and the performance of the portrait / portrait photography created images with a blurred background in the back in an optimal way.

  • Normal photography,

  • Wide lens photography,

  • Dual digital zoom 2,

  • Wide lens photography,

Battery: realme GT - fast charge - 15 minutes - 63% energy

realme has packed the device with a battery with a capacity of 4500 milliamps / hour, its performance is reasonable and not sure you will always be able to finish a whole day with it.

To me it held from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., when I had 2% energy left (screen time of just over 4 hours).

realme offers a very fast charge for its model, using a 65-watt charger in the SuperDart technology included in the kit.

It was able to charge 63% energy within a quarter of an hour.

very impressive.

What is missing here, is wireless charging, a standard option in flagship devices, which for some reason realme has not integrated here.

Price: NIS 2,100 (official bug importer)

Bottom line:

the realme GT is an accessible alternative in the flagship devices market, but still not to be confused, the company has compromised in many places to offer this price.

Among other things, it did not combine wireless charging, water protection, various capabilities in the camera or screen that do not compare to those found in more expensive smartphones.

Despite all this, if you do not want to invest large sums, this is a device that is definitely worth checking out (provided you like the color yellow).
